Had some spare time today to look at some clearances. I thought a big beneficiary of this system would be the bordering Victorian Leagues in mainly Wimmera, Sunraysia and Millewa who still would be paying a fair whack. Not too much movement on this front or nothing really worth taking note of...

Wimmera have introduced the points system this season... wouldnt see much going on there this season whilst theyre all panicking about it. Besides, unless clubs are offering close to a working wage each week, i couldnt see many wanting to travel up to 6 hours each way for a game of footy.

Nothing has changed at all in country football here in South Australia. One little clause in the rules ensures that nothing will ever change. For anyone to think that country clubs have stopped or reduced payments are kidding themselves is what I'm led to believe. I know that there are a number who have reigned themselves in, but to a good majority of clubs that one little clause in the rules, means nothing has changed what so ever.

Maximum 15 points for A grade sides and this is the same from Div 1 to Div 6/7. Not sure about finals though.

I think it goes up to 17 or 18 in finals coz of the extra player on the bench.

good to see oyster has become the spokesman for the "majority" of country clubs, as he is across what they are all doing in regard to the salary cap.

I'm just wondering what the zone registers are going to be doing
During the finals and over summer?
Did the salary cap work ?
Did anyone get caught or fined?

No it hasn't worked , it's just a stupid idea some croanies dreamt up
To try and save the SANFL .
No club has been caught or fined, if clubs are prepared to work hard to raise money they should be allowed to spend
How they want
It's a joke

Looks like its working... crowd numbers are the lowest they've ever been...
But seriously a decision needs to be made, its either a Points System or Salary Cap.
Having a Points System and Salary Cap affects the standard of the competition and if the standard is ordinary who would want to watch it?

I for one just hate the ******* paperwork.

I'm philosophically opposed to the concept, but not enough to do anything about it.

The paperwork however, let it die in a hole.

Points system - Yes. The only effective equalisation measure that I have seen. It actually negates the need for a salary cap as clubs cannot go on spending sprees and recruit an army of big-point recruits over one summer, as we have seen in some of the WA leagues that have it and also in Victoria.

Salary cap - No. It's unenforceable and so easily circumvented. Waste of time and effort. There are too many ways to hide money and a volunteer from a league doesn't have the time to squander looking into club books.

Points only inflates the payments to players that probably don't deserve it.

What people fail to see with open slather payments are 'community' clubs forgetting their place in the football league structure and by limiting payments is safe guarding volunteer administrators from serious legal ramifications if things go pear shaped!

Clubs will easily hide the money if they want to anyway.

These have all happened before at elite and grassroots levels ...
* Sponsor pays part or all of a player's payments directly to them
* Sponsor hires missus as a cleaner or receptionist, working zero hours a week
* With gate takings, the declared amount in the books is a couple of hundred less in the books (or more depending on the league). The skimmed-off money goes to one or two guns and the declared payments of these players are undervalued in the books.
* Raffle conducted around ground at home game. Money raised goes as back hander outside the books.
* The good ol' 'second set of books' just for auditors ... the president and treasurer only know where the real one is.
* In Amateur footy in Victoria, the children of a high-profile recruit may get a full or half scholarship to a school associated with an 'Old Boys' club no matter the intellect of the child/ren.

They will continue to happen under a salary cap.

It's a joke that some of the Melbourne metro leagues are looking at introducing a $200K cap for next season - this is more than double the cap for a Tasmanian State League club!
