South V Sturt AO Saturday September 3 @ 3:10

Postby DOC » Tue Aug 30, 2016 11:03 am

Haren will be an out, possibly Guilden. Who comes in?

Irra, Cailoto, Overall and Heaslip all a chance.

Sturt and South beat each other at home (both convincingly) so the match ups will be interesting. Beard has beaten Crabby in both games and maybe Tom Fields may take him.

Weather forecast possible shower but ground will be in good nic. South made the width of The BOT the same as AO last week.

Quietly confident we can do the job.

My Lennox Walker long-range forecast says that the Panthers will get over the line in a reasonably close affair (especially if it's a bit wet). The outs for South will hurt, but as long as they keep pumping the ball to Eddy he should keep them in front.

South with a few injury concerns...Sturt with a couple to come back in..Osborn & Riley.
South returning to the ground that was its home ground for almost 80 years..

Im tipping the Panthers to keep the momentum and get across the line by 22 pts.

If the South players are as nervous as i am we're doomed. Hopefully they have greater maturity than myself and stay focused on what is going to be one tough game. Riley and the "world's biggest man" are big ins for Sturt we will have to be at our best.......pass the valium.

South by 3 or 4 goals. Both teams will feature a few faces that didn't play the last time they met a month or so ago.

Going into a finals campaign with some genuine anticipation and expectation is a rare feeling for South supporter. :-SS

Well these two teams come in to this with contrasting form. South are playing with confidence, where as Sturt, impacted by injuries, have fallen over the line against North and had a draw against Glenelg. Sturt get a couple back this week and South have a couple of outs, but I just can't see Sturt getting up here. South by around 5 goals.
No Surrender!

Word in the club rooms after last Saturday's win was South supporters are gonna sit at the Southern end at the Oval.

Really think we can win this week, have hit top form at the right time of the year.

Pretty nervous right now.

Finals anything can really happen. As mentioned, Sturt with some handy IN's. (are they 100% fit??)

Still think on our form we should be playing the Eagles next week.

Players are hungry for success.

Our time is now.

Riley should be pretty fit, given he had broken wrist would have still been doing a fair bit of running.
Osborn on the other hand could be a bit underdone

I'm afraid I am going to be missing this one. I have business on at the time, which I am trying to get moved, but I have no time to move it to.
These sides have been pretty even this year. Both have a great home record. South playing with a heap of confidence and Sturt have struggled recently. I reckon we need to throw the bones into the sky and see where they land to decide this one.
Sturt played South in a Qualifying just a couple of years ago didn't we? That finals series consisted of Sturt, Norwood, Port, South, and the other side was knocked out in the Elimination and I can't remember them. Did South play in last year's finals? I am just wondering if there is a bit of modern day rivalry developing.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

South were replaced by Centrals in the last round in the 5 last year....2014 however, South defeated the Eagles in the Elimination, Sturt lost a close one to Norwood in the Qualifying then were smacked by South in the First Semi Final.

Thanks Heater. I remember now.
I would be interested in seeing a list of South's final's opponents over these past 10 years or so. There might be a possible changing of the guard occurring, talk of rivalries might become more relevant in future where South is concerned.

Prior to 2014, we beat Glenelg in 2011 before losing to the Eagles.

Previous finals appearance to that was 2006 when we beat Port before losing to North.

This is our first top three finish since 1991.

Fourth in 2014 only due to the presence of garbage teams in the comp. Were it not for that, South would have entered the finals in top spot.

IGA LEAGUE QUALIFYING FINAL
Saturday September 3
Adelaide Oval – 3.10pm

SOUTH ADELAIDE
South Adelaide has named valuable linkman Adam Gulden for its Qualifying Final clash with Sturt at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
Gulden, who rolled his ankle close to half-time of the Round 22 contest against Adelaide, has been listed at half-back for the Panthers.
If the unheralded 25-year-old is a late withdrawal, South coach Brad Gotch is likely to call upon running half-back Emmanuel Irra, who has been included on the extended interchange bench.
Irra has been joined by utility Joe Haines and tall swingman Sam Overall on the five-man interchange which must be trimmed by two before the bounce.
Overall, who proved to be a surprise packet with his strong marking in the 2014 IGA League finals series, looms as the logical replacement for former Magpie Ben Haren.
Haren will miss the rest of the season after spraining the AC-joint in his shoulder during the first term against the Crows last Saturday.

F: Seccull, Eddy, Gotch
HF: Hitchcock, McMahon, Barnes
C: Brown, Newell, Rankine
HB: Taylor, Fields, Gulden
B: Rose, Crabb, Durdin

R: Bass, Cross, Liddle
INT: Ellison, Schwarz, Irra, Overall, Haines
IN: Irra, Overall, Haines
OUT: Haren (shoulder)

STURT
Sturt midfielder Aidan Riley is edging closer to a return in Saturday’s Qualifying Final against South Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.
Sidelined since Round 15 with a broken hand, the former Crow trained with promise as the Double Blues hit the track for their main session at the home of SA football on Wednesday night.
One of four inclusions to the Double Blues’ squad of 23, Riley need only get through Thursday night’s light training session to seal a spot against the Panthers.
Sturt is also set to be boosted by the return of giant ruckman Jack Osborn, who has overcome a thigh ailment.
‘’Both trained well last night (Wednesday),’’ Sturt football manager Shane Grimm said.
‘’Jack will definitely play while Aidan, we thought might not be ready until next week but he seems to think he will be fine.
‘’He just needs to get through training tonight (Thursday night) and he will play.’’
Sturt coach Marty Mattner has also included utility Sean Samblich and goalsneak Jack Penfold in his five-man extended interchange bench.
Promising teenager Steven Slimming will play in Sturt’s Under-18 Elimination Final on Sunday while small forward Ben Hansen has been squeezed out of the line-up.

F: Carey, K. Beard, Gamble
HF: Greenslade, M. Evans, Hone
C: Lienert, Battersby, Crocker
HB: Page, Stephens, McMahon
B: Gilfoy, F. Evans, Jonas

R: Osborn, Kirkwood, Martin
INT: Harms, Riley, Samblich, Parrella, Penfold
IN: Riley, Osborn, Samblich, Penfold
OUT: Hansen, Slimming

R: Sweet, Nixon, Minervini
INT: Denham, Rogers, Grant, Smith, Garlett, Woodcock, Daniele, Coventry,

And of course you wouldn't think that this years minor premier and runner up from 2015 would be worthy.
