Could you imagine the crowd we'd get if both the Crows won last weekend. The GF would be getting even less coverage than it already is. Move it back to a week after the AFL GF before we encounter this potential disaster.

Great point Wedgie. Its been a stand alone fixture for a lot of years. Was the GF date brought forward to please the 2 ALF sides and their requirement to have a end of season break.?

Yep. Big gamble by the SANFL hoping the Crows will be incompetent enough to not make the Prelim any year in the future but theve come up trumps so far.

The GF crowd isn't the worst thing to imagine in that terrifying scenario

I know but it's one thing to consider.
What a disaster it would be for South Australian football if it was to ever occur.

We've lost the long weekend for the GF now though for good, which would hurt I think even if we did finish up after the AFL. All that said I'd still prefer to see it moved.

The Grand Final date is in itself a symbol of how shambolic the reserves issue is.
All SANFL fans would rather the SANFL grand final take place the week after the AFL grand final. Even AFL fans still hungry for their footy after the AFL's biggest day, are very likely to take an interest in the SANFL grand final. It is an opportunity for the SANFL, just for one day, to be the number one competition in the state once more. Just one day a year, with no bigger footy to shade the light.
But, could you imagine the Ravens in a preliminary final, knowing that if they win they'll be training their guts out while the rest of the club and all their supporters have finished for the year? However if the football authorities in this state follow this style of thinking, they would have to admit that yes, the Ravens did in fact have a SANFL approved reason not to win against Sturt last Sunday.
Hence, this cannot be the reason.
So what is the reason? If it is perceivable as not being fair for the reserves to be continuing their season while the seniors have finished theirs, then every single season there is the potential for the reserves sides to simply and suddenly give up mid finals series as their seniors are no longer competing. This is a purely logical reasoning and cannot be argued against.
So what is the reason? When the SANFL has so much to gain from a grand final played the week after the AFL big dance, what possible reason could there be for our grand final to be played a week earlier?
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Have GF day the week after the AFL GF day on the Saturday.
Have the Prelim on the Friday night before the AFL GF day and have the previous finals as double headers on the Saturday as the AFL finals that coincide are usually night or twilight games.
You're welcome SANFL.
PM me for a decent minor round program too, I can do that easily too.

Reckon it will be around the 30k mark.

Prob would have got close to 40k if South had made the granny!

Haha i take it you're joking. If it makes 30k or over that would be a good crowd. Any Grand Final with the Eagles, South or West playing you can take off another 5k at a minimum, not including the AFL reserves sides esp the Crows that would be a disaster. Normal Grand Final crowd seems to be around the 35k mark when the other teams play each other. The crowd last year was pretty good for two clubs with two of the smallest followings in the league.

I was sitting in the eastern stand on the first floor. The below ground floor looked chocker block but looking around at our level there was not many there. The entire southern stand first floor up was empty. We were having a guess that the crowd was 15-20k. Was surprised at 30k

Looked every bit of 30,000 from where I was sitting. The hill hold a lot more standing than you'd think... SANFL should be very happy with that crowd. Well done to all of the Eagles fans who turned up, but if a Norwood (or god forbid) Port had made it, they would have topped 40k.

I am guess that "first floor" must mean "top tier"?
I estimated 33,000 during the first quarter. I tried to get a seat in the middle tier of the Eastern stand and it was full, in the time I took to search around there I noticed the northern end had filled up, we checked out seating in the top tier, but it was a bit too high for Mrs and junior Therisingblues who seemed to get vertigo, as we descended from that stand there was a river of people flowing up the escalators. We eventually seated ourselves in the Riverbank stand.
The members was sparsely filled, the top tier of the Riverbank stand was closed off and the top tier of the Eastern stand was about half full. The area I was in was about 80% full, and the rest of the ground looked packed. The oval holds a capacity 54,000 or thereabouts, and it was obviously over half full. Loved the atmosphere. Great day.
