Then why not take him straight to the police, or go straight to the police, like he should have?

If this was a regular Joe Blow, we'd all be condemning the bloke for doing a runner and saying what a disgraceful human he is, just as many are with Impey - he just has advisors who can help guide him through the situation and they just made some bad decisions.

It depends DW...
If he was drunk when Port found him, then I think they have done all they can to hide that fact.
If he was sober, then they have made some ridiculous decisions in advising him to front up to the police station so late after the event.

Or maybe he was just that ****** up that he passed out and needed to sleep it off.

Chances are that would be the case.

If I was Port, and I was face to face with one of my players who 'd done what he did, and he was completely sober, I'd have him at the cop shop ASAP so there'd be no doubt about him being completely sober.
In my mind there can be only two reasons he didn't receive advice to report immediately. 1) stupidity, 2) he was drunk.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Love the way all posters carrying on about how $5000 fine not enough . Shows their ignorance as that is the maximum a player can be fined according to regulations from AFL players association not the AFL . Sure it is like a smack on the wrist perhaps but need to remember he is only 21 and I know a fair few of us probably did things we regretted at this age , be interesting to see outcome of police reports and court case since you can get a suspended sentence these days for what is described as the coward punch which puts someone in hospital.

Clayton Oliver has received an fine of an undisclosed amout, obviously it can only be up to 5k and will not miss any games fr his DUI.

He has to source his own driver safety education and it tasked with organising a specialist in trauma and road safety to present to the players.

Melbourne have put a bit of thought into that it seems to educate the young man.

Freo forward Shane Yarren granted personal leave as he faces an additional charge.

Not sure what it is though.

Honestly if you have some bad news now is a good time to drop it. Port have done the other teams a massive favor here.

I thought Thomas had admitted that JI had been drinking, but couldn't say how much? I presume they do know, as they spoke to JI at some point after the incident, and his extent of grog consumption would've been one of the first questions asked. I guess in their view if he's not DUI (and we'll never know) then there's no need to speculate on how pissed he was, since they would say the legal limit is the 'real' test for intoxication.

Not sure Port nor anyone else can 'confirm' DUI, the closest they could get would be an educated guess of whether he was based on a drinks consumed versus time analysis.

But as others have said, the inference is that he was drunk, otherwise why would he not go straight to the cops? Until this inference is rebutted, it'll stick. If Port comes out and confirm he was drunk, it's a bad look for JI and more so the club, unless they can rebut it with a statement that he'd had only a couple of beers or was sober.

There would be some difficulty coming up with an alternative theory about how a skilled football player could manage to manifest such poor spatial judgement and physical co-ordination if he were not intoxicated with some substance...

Yep. Cousins and that Freo player are helping to get Port off the back pages (and front in some states)
