Heard a whisper today - no merger next season. Instead a 14th team at Mt Barker.

No idea whether there is any validity to this whatsoever!

Makes absolutely no sense when 2 neighbouring clubs can't field full compliment of teams......

Reading the Hansard transcript from recent Select Committee investigation, this seems unlikely. They seem pretty hellbent on making the competition 12 teams.

Heard similar rumour, bit hard to kick out the team on top of the ladder!! Don't think 12 teams is the issue, their main issue is getting rid of the Bye. 14 teams looks like the option.

Yes, that was a promise if the Liberals won the last election. NXT will hold them to it. No reason for the new facilities not to go ahead at Mt Barker. A good time, if ever, to add a team. Murray Bridge, Strathalbyn and all the other hills towns within 30 minutes. Makes it realistic for players (junior and senior) to make two trainings per week and hopefully a bigger web would collect more future Redbacks. They have a premier Soccer team at Woodside. Reading the local school newsletter you have kids in this area wanting to be soccer players "when they grow up". Same principle as AFL expanding to new markets. Build it and they will come.

Really hope this happens. Much more positive story and move for cricket instead of trying to shut down 100+ year old clubs and destroying the work of generations of volunteers who love their clubs and have poured their heart and soul into them

That a few clubs are struggling to fill lower grades is an issue no doubt and needs some resources thrown at it to fix.

Having read the transcript, it seems one of the clubs has spent a considerable amount on junior development and they haven't come.
Hearing that Barossa has had a considerable decline in junior sides this season, which doesn't assist Northern based clubs.
SACA not to keen to add female sides at present as they don't want to dilute the talent pool, would a 14th team not have the same affect?

Whilst its true the Barossa clubs have had a decline in junior numbers at U16 level with only 6 teams, over the last 5-10 years there has only been a maximum of 8 teams anyway. U14 numbers are strong with pretty much 16 teams every year as are U12 and U10. Trinity has a fairly big impact on juniors numbers at U16 level with only one U16 team in Gawler and apparently they consistently only have 7 players.
There would be just as many ex Barossa juniors at other grade clubs as there is at the Jets and thats a concern for the Jets

Not sure about a considerable decline. U16's are the only grade down and that usually floats between 6-8 sides. U14's has 16 sides again, U12's at 17 sides and U10's at 13 sides. Also have record number of Milo cricket participants at several locations in the Valley.
As Daisy said though there are plenty of Barossa kids bypassing the Jets to play at the Gullies or further afar which suggests it may be more of an issue with the Jets than the Barossa

Could the Barossa support their own grade club? And what would it do for/to the local competition?

Looks like the one day quarter finals are decided

Kensington vs Port Adelaide
West Torrens vs Adelaide
Glenelg vs Sturt
Woodville vs Tea Tree Gully

Fair way off (Sunday January 29) but on paper they look like some intriguing match ups.

Been a great season so far with West Torrens and Adelaide the bolters, both nestled in the top four. Three of last season's semi finalists currently outside the top four. Would expect TTG and Sturt to come home strong after Christmas though.

Not a hope in hell of supporting its own grade club. If it did I reckon it would have to start at B grade level
SACA/government would have to build 4 ovals for starters given that local clubs wouldnt be folding and would continue to use their towns ovals. This is probably badly needed in the Gawler area. With all the development that has gone on at Hewitt and Gawler East not one oval has been built. The facilities in Gawler are 3rd world yet those clubs pay 10 times more for the use of their ovals than Barossa and Light clubs. The Gawler council is broke, with Hewiit being part of the Light council.

Reading the transcripts SACA briefly considered 14 but ruled it out at this point in time. However if a club chose to move however......
