Nope, happy they're taking a conservative approach to Dixons ankle. Obviously needs to be managed closely.

Either way it's not a great scenario

They return too early and they risk further injury

Or

They take the cautious approach and they have missed a fair chunk of preseason and start from behind the ball.

Especially an ankle Dixon, I doubt his being able to do much if any cardio work so far (maybe some swimming and zero impact stuff)

I'd imagine the Alter-G treadmill would be his best friend and worst enemy all at once at the moment.

Yeah for sure

Though what I keep hearing in the fitness scene about these is that there slightly overrated because what they don't account for is the physical impact fatigue 'real' running actually causes and is part of increasing running ability (note not cardio fitness)

I'll try and find it but apparently there was a study done where a guy literally spent a whole year going no other cardio than running on one of these treadmills, at the end of the year they ran stamina tests and surprising his beep test and time trials of 'real' running were considerably low considering his running ability on the treadmill

Yeah agree and that's why clubs are happy to spend the thousands on the treadmills

It's interesting you see ALL clubs talk about how important a 'proper' pre season is etc

Yet they are willing to send players in for 'minor' 'clean out' surgeries which have such a big risk of having delays, other injuries etc etc

Sometimes you question is it worth it

Will we see as times go on teams putting the 'cue in the rack' much earlier into seasons if they know they can't make finals, you get the benefits of better draft placing, game time into youngesters, players in for their minor surgery much earlier so their ready for the next pre season

Will teams start pulling the pin on a season in say round 9-10 etc

Ah the old tanking debate. If you think about which teams most 'famous' for tanking, or at least the biggest suspects you have Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond. At one stage each of these teams could have laid claim to being the most powerful team in the competition. Power teams have an aura, a winning culture. Not one of these clubs has ever got that winning culture back. Pulling the pin or putting games into youngsters means you aren't really going all out to win and you sacrifice that winning culture. You can just turn that back on with the flick of a switch and there is no guarantee the next season that your best laid plans will come to fruition and that you'll have a big year the next season. For this reason I doubt you will see this, at least not as early as you suggested.

regards,

With the critical membership and sponsorship base demanding results I think the days of "tanking" are going by the wayside. You simply can't afford to "look to the future" in round 14 or so anymore. You have to play to the line.

An interesting test case will be Fremantle, let's see how they bounce back this year and what impact that has on them off field ( members/sponsors ) if they don't.

Yeah, who'd want to follow a club that doesn't play to the line? Whose primary goal is something other than winning? Actually, I dare say such an attitude would really piss off followers of other clubs in the competition.

I don't think Melbourne or Carlton are disliked because of what they've done in recent years.

GAVIN WANGANEEN is designing the football for the 2017 Sir Douglas Nicholls Indigenous Round.

Having recently turned his hand to a career in traditional art, Wanganeen has been tapped by the AFL to work with Sherrin to design the footballs to be used in Round 10.

The 2004 premiership player and former Port Adelaide captain recently launched his first solo exhibition in Willunga.

His design will first appear when the Power take on the Cats in the round-opener at Simonds Stadium on Thursday 25 May at 7.30pm local time.

Port Adelaide has reached 50,000 members ahead of Christmas and is pushing ahead to the 60,000-member milestone once again.

It’s a show of strength for a Port Adelaide supporter base that has cracked 60,000 memberships in the past two seasons.

Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas says the support shown by members before Christmas will motivate the Power heading into the New Year.

“We are close to a Christmas record for member sign-ups, so that is very encouraging,” Mr Thomas said.

“We’re going for 60,000 members for the third year in-a-row and we’re very comfortable with where we’re tracking to reach that target again.

“Reaching 50,000 before the end of the year is a massive show of strength from our supporters, and going by the turnout at our first open training for the preseason on Monday, the appetite for footy is burning strong.

“I want to thank all of our members who have signed up for the upcoming season and encourage all of those waiting to jump on board to help us charge towards 60,000 and become a member today.”

Reading between the lines, I'd say it means they've written off 2017 already and they've decided to build for 2018.

Smart ****, aren't you?

The article was pre-Xmas 2016, as I take a holiday from work I also take a holiday from the smarmy Port bashing **** on here at the same time. ;)

Only posted it today as there wasn't much activity in here and figured someone would come in and sink the boot in to get things going. Sure enough....
