Dutchy wrote:It is with great excitement that we can announce Byron Sumner has signed to play for Sturt in 2017 and 2018.
Byron played his junior football at Woodville South Football Club, he was a brilliant junior player, played for South Australia in the 2009 National Championships and made his league debut for Woodville West Torrens in the same year. He was then drafted to Sydney Swans at pick 54 in the 2009 National Draft. He played one game in 2011 for Sydney and was delisted at the end of that year and came back and played for Woodville West Torrens in 2012.
He was an outstanding league player in 2012 and our recruiting committee watched him with interest in the subsequent years. In 2016 he played at Jervois Football Club in the River Murray Football League (a fantastic competition in our recruiting zone) and at the end of the season Marty Mattner spoke with Byron. Marty played with Byron at Sydney and after their discussions he joined Sturt 2017 pre-season training in November. He has not missed a session, has settled in well with the players and his football has been outstanding in the game play training segments. He feels comfortable with the Sturt structure and environment, he gets on well with Dwayne Wilson and Coach Mattner and he has committed to play at Sturt in 2017 and 2018.
He will add a touch of class with his kicking coming out of defence and we are sure he will excite the supporters with the way he will take the game on.
David Oatey - General Manager Football

At his best he is a brilliant player. However, unless his attitude has changed, he goes missing in a tough hard matches because he hates body contact. Sturt won the GF against the eagles (I thought) because they played tough, uncompromising, contested footy. Sumner definitely does not bring this and so might upset Sturt's balance. But I hope for his sake he goes alright......just not against the eagles!

With all the outs I can only see the Eagles going one way and that's down. The way it's going we'll be lucky to make the top 5.

Meanwhile the richest club in the sanfl continues to sit on its hands while it reduces its debt and another club that was about to close it's doors a few years ago, continues on it's merry way winning a premiership and recruit whoever it wants. Am I missing something here

Very good management. We have been turning profits as well as winning a flag.

And the Eagles need coaches
Either the $ has run out or interest level is average.
We know the competition is on its knees so can't be too far away when all 8 clubs get
to open the gates for free entry such is the care factor about it!
And Strut have a big shiny new cup to put all those wooden spoons in

The $1 million dollar benefactor is an urban myth. It simply is not true.

What about if we remove the dollar amount of the said benefactor?

I completely respect your position and that you more than most on here would know, but I've been told personally by two different Sturt sources that the figure I stated is correct.

I too have been told by two separate Sturt officials that there was a past seconds player who provided $1,000,000 to the club.
If you PM me I can tell you his name but I don't think I should make his name public.
Anyway if it wasn't for an extremely generous benefactor my mob would probably no longer exist.
He is back at our club, too.

I can remember in the Nunan years when we had no money but won two flags. In fact I would say that we were the most cash scrapped club to win a flag in the 70s and 80s. I know which era I enjoyed more.

He's still the CEO. Whether we're paying him in dollars or pokie chips I can't be 100% sure.

Was a state junior when with the Magpies. Transferred to Glenelg and finished there lasy year. Small on baller (Caleb Daniel size but not as talented). Think another James Boyd.
