What do you think of this concept???

Postby Bombers4EVA » Fri Feb 17, 2017 12:58 pm

Hey all. We have all said that we would love for State of Origin footy to come back. But we can all agree that it is very unlikely. So how about this idea?

So I have been thinking (which is dangerous) with all the spare time up my sleeve. How would you and the public respond to the idea of 4 x "All Star" teams playing off against each other? And what my concept is, is like this.

You pick 4 players ( for example; Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe, Luke Hodge and Buddy Franklin). They are the captains of their team. (For example; Patrick Dangerfield's team could be called Danger's Destroyers, etc). The 4 captains are all given a complete and up-to-date list of current players from the AFL. They then take it in turns to pick which ever player they want until they reach let's say 25 players each. Those players then play for the team they have been picked in. The teams play a round robin style of competition to decide who is the winner. It can be for charity or for anything else the AFL want to organize it with. Obviously the availability of each player and what time of the year you be best suited would have to be looked at. But's it's like Fantasy Footy that we all play on the internet but in reality.

It's an idea and I've tried to get it across as simple as I can. What do you think?

You will probably find the games would not be played at full pace, and the players would not put their bodies at risk for what amounts to be exhibition games. No ones gonna want to watch that crap.

The major sports in the US all have All-Star games, and all of them are shit, and interest has waned for years. Not many of the best players are gonna want to jeopardise a future contract because they injured themselves in a nothing game.

I understand the potential for injuries is always going to be there. But as a spectator. Wouldn't it be a awesome spectacle to go watch the best of the best playing against each other? It would be good to watch a game where in one team you could have Joel Selwood lining up in the middle. And then on the opposing side you have Patrick Dangerfield. It would make for a good contest. That's if the player's were wanting to do it and the clubs allowed them too as well (which in reality, they won't). But think about the public.

Yeah it would be purely a exhibition series. Depending on if it's annual or every 2nd year. Before every series, you pick 4 different captains.

It would be good in theory.

But the best players aren't gonna play their best footy. They'll play half arsed. Tackling would be down, the pace would be down. The game would look slow and shit.

Check out the NFL Pro Bowl for an example. The guys run up to each other and cuddle each other to tackle.

No interest from me but I have watched bits of the ladies playing AFL...
(Yes, I noticed the potential double entendre in that sentence but it wasn't planned - it just slipped out just like this one.)

With your smooth moves, potential isn't really accurate, fait accompli comes to mind.

so the four captains pick their mates and all the good players first, and all the shit players get left 'til last.

Sounds just like PE class in primary school.
