Exactly. There goes the incentive for the industries affected to work weekends.

I know that I'd be likely to drop my Sunday shift when this comes into effect.

On the contrary, I think this will be great for small business trading and will allow them to trade on weekends at a lower cost.
If you think retailers will not find workers who will accept 1.5 times usual rate for a Sunday think again.

I've never really worked weekends but I've never understood why you should get paid more to do so. I understand the impact to social and family situations, but that's the choice made when you go into retail surely.

Of course, unless you're like me and are no good at anything else.

Unfortunately I don't work for a small company either. I know I'm expendable, hence why I don't let the place rule my life.

I get $10 more per hour on Sundays, which is a better rate than when I worked in a servo.

Retail isn't the only businesses requiring work on weekends/Sundays.
People will work for less money, particularly those with a foreign background.

Here goes...

Why should there be penalty rates on weekends? Do weekend staff do twice the amount of work than weekday people? I keep hearing from people that they won't work weekends now, (don't get me started on that, blight on our society to want everything gifted to them) with high unemployment the next person in line gets the job. People should not take their jobs for granted, too many younger people do.

Times have changed, shops don't close 12:30 on Saturdays and reopen at 9am on Mondays. The world has evolved into a 24 hour business with the internet so people have to adapt as businesses do. To think that just because you own a business you must be making a fortune or if not the business must be run poorly is a common misconception among people. The amount of money that needs to be paid to different government agencies, utilities, councils, rent etc is staggering even before wages need to be paid.

Do I think this will create new jobs in the short term, no. Long term maybe as it helps business people to have higher confidence and therefore may lead them to reinvest into something else to create more jobs.

And either way, should be irrelevant in any debates/discussion.

Penalty Rates are for working anti-social hours.
We live in a 24-7 society, but who forced that upon us?
Sunday workers may not work twice as hard but would miss out twice as much for social/family activities.

Agreed

People forget that household budgets on many families are tight so if they can squeeze a few extra weeks out of a pair of shoes, a frypan or whatever they will. In good times that doesn't happen, liberal spending is more prevalent

Please MT don't give me business was the one who turned us into a 24-7 operation.

Simple MT, people don't like being paid the same rate as those who work during the week don't take the job. Others will. Many people who do work weekends are Uni students who are studying during the week, why is that a business owners problem? Their choice to go to Uni

I work during the week, I miss out on a fair bit of stuff that my kids do, sport, school, functions but I don't get paid double time for that.

I think some sort of penalty rates are sensible. But I dont really understand why sundays still hold a special place over saturdays.

1.5x for both saturday and sunday seems appropriate to me

Why is Saturday more special than a Thursday?

because less people work on a saturday than a thursday, and its harder to get people to work on those days.

Poor reasoning

If I wanted or needed a job I would work whenever it was required. Too many people think they are entitled to too many things. Times have changed.

Haha benny

IMO every working hour of each week is worth the exact same as the others, none are more special than the others

You gotta be kidding.
This is just another hit on lower income earners. I wish penalty rates were around when I was in the pub game.
Those who work weekends miss out on much, much more than those who don't. Those who work weekends sometimes don't have a choice either.
You miss out on your kids sport, your own sport, going to watch professional sport, 18th's, 21st's, 40th's, weddings, bucks shows, hens nights, weekends away with friends/partners/families etc etc...
The argument that someone unemployed would gladly take your place is utter crap too. There are pubs and retail stores hiring everyday of the week if they looked hard enough.
Until you actually work weekend hospitality/retail for a while, you won't fully understand.

Now, while we're at, can we slash weekend rates for those greedy, ungrateful nurses too?

I've worked plenty of weekends Spargo.

I'm missing my 13 year old sons basketball today because I'm at work. Where's my compensation?

When people CHOOSE these professions they know weekend work is required. Again their choice

Age of entitlements is over IMO

I wouldn't have thought those taking home maybe $500 a week have a sense of entitlement.
