Sorry, you missed the sarcasm of that comment. They are saying categorically that there has not been, other than the bequest mentioned, any other sizeable gift of money.

No need to apologise.

What I was saying was that those who maintain a recent gift was made to the club need to back it up with evidence of whom and how much, in light of statements like yours that rebut their assertion. In the absence of such, your proposition holds true.

I have posted before that the supposed $1 million donation to the SFC is nought but an urban myth! It has absolutely no substance. What such unsubstantiated information does do is detract from the reality of the SFC's current position of strength. This is as a result of prudent management and the collective efforts of a number of people who have worked their backsides off to ensure that the club didn't become yesterday's hero. I'm sure the club's management would embrace anyone who walked up the stairs at Oxford Terrace with any financial assistance, but, for the last time, there is not a $1 million dollar benefactor. It's a figment of some very vivid imaginations! If there are any facts that are for certain it is that an army of people have contributed in man hours and fundraising efforts that collectively would account for an amount well in excess of a million dollars! The bequested amount CC correctly refers to were in a significant amount of mining shares given to the club by a supporter long departed. I'm not going to name him out of respect, other than to say it brought time for a club on it's knees! And, it was not a million dollars!

Do the SANFL still guarantee Sturt's debt to Westpac?

Bays make a small profit from last year. Good to hear, seems small but better than nothing and hopefully a step in the right direction.

http://www.news.com.au/national/south-australia/glenelg-football-club-makes-14000-profit-for-2016-rebounding-from-four-years-of-losses/news-story/27e5ae88fe744c2e51728d11d417a92a

Glenelg Football Club makes $14,000 profit for 2016, rebounding from four years of losses

GLENELG Football Club made a slim $14,000 profit last year – a big rebound from 2015’s $209,000 loss but a long way from being able to make a dent in the club’s $3 million debt.

The club’s annual report, released last week, says the Tigers need to spend more money they don’t have to improve the Glenelg Club function centre to make the club more profitable.

The Glenelg Club function centre, bistro and pokies venue made a $533,899 profit in 2016, but the football operations lost $173,144.

Once depreciation and loan interest were taken into account, the club as a whole made $14,278, compared with a $209,000 loss in 2015.

It is the first time the club has made a profit since 2011.

Glenelg’s debt has gone from $3.4 million to $3 million thanks to a $320,000 SANFL payment from the sale of AAMI Stadium, and $70,000 from its Save the Tigers fundraising campaign.

President Nick Chigwidden said the improvement in the club’s financial position had come through increased bistro and bar revenue and “tightening our belt” in areas such as wages and marketing.

“It’s been a fantastic turnaround to make a profit, but it’s still hard to eat away those debt levels when you’re making a $14,000 profit,” Mr Chigwidden said.

“It’s not the operating of the business – we can certainly make that profitable – it’s the ability to pay off the big loans.”

The club owes $1 million to ANZ and $2 million to Holdfast Bay Council.

The council money went towards building the Glenelg Club function centre in 2002, which Mr Chigwidden says now needs another $150,000 of renovations to remain competitive with other venues.

“It does need some refurbishment in the sense it’s getting tired – the carpet and paint,” he said.

Negotiations with the council about relieving some of the debt have gone on for more than a year without result.

Tigers membership was up 300 to 2977 last year, however average home-match attendance fell by 433 to 2772.

The club is hopeful better on-field success this year will lead to better financial results.

Mr Chigwidden said Glenelg fans were known to come out to matches more often when the team was successful.

“It’ll make a big difference if we can win games of footy,” Mr Chigwidden said.

“Hopefully that brings crowds with it as well.”

Justin Scripps and Brian Veale were elected board members at the club’s annual general meeting, held last night.

Have to agree with the last comments by Mr Chigwidden there. Glenelg managed almost 3,000 members last year and finished bottom or near bottom. If they actually made the 5 they would draw huge crowds, especially if the AFL reserves left the SANFL.

Without the Footy Pk payment we would've been $25k worse off than the 2015 report.

I remember it.
I was in Japan at the time, but I got quite a buzz reading about it. I think Sturt were top and had dished out a few thumpings but were severely depreciated through injury and AFL call ups, and Glenelg were sitting about 2nd or 3rd. I think the Glenelg staff were caught completely unawares and due to the huge line up, some of the crowd couldn't enter the oval until the second quarter.
Glenelg are a sleeping giant. Crowd wise anyway.

It was a superb atmosphere.
Shoulder to shoulder.
I got in early so had no idea of any long lineups, and still can't recall that.
Yes, Glenelg probably have the biggest bandwagon and if the AFL reserves disappear I will happily return to going on a weekly basis.

Yes Booney.

After seeing how many Sturt fans turned up to last year's grand final, I dare say that a Sturt v Glenelg grand final would almost sell out Adelaide Oval.

How are South's financials?
Heard a conversation from a pretty well-informed bloke on the weekend suggesting they are "broke". Hope it's not the case and on this occasion he's incorrectly informed.

Among most SANFL insiders, South's financial position has been dire for a while now. That's not from anyone at the club though, so hopefully it isn't the case. Can't afford for any of our clubs to be scraping pennies
