Talk on the national game

Stevens and Waite both get a week! honestly it's a contact sport for Christ sake, no one wants to see blokes knocked out in tackles but broken tackles are spoken about week after week yet now you can't tackle a bloke for fear of missing a week.

And to rub salt in the umpire actually awarded the Stevens tackle holding the ball 2 days later, 2 week suspension WTF!

I really fear where this once great game is heading.

We should be looking at the actions of players not the injury reports afterwards. Like you said no one wants to see players knocked out but players are taught to wrap the arms so the ball cant be released. This really goes against everything the game is about, we're already seeing the bump being pushed out of the game. Now the tackle?

The issue is duty of care. There is a major issue in contact sports around the world, especially NFL in America, where concussion related illness later in life is creating massive lawsuits. AFL are trying to stamp out concussions that can be avoided. Slamming someone into the ground while their arms are pinned so they cannot protect their head is not "everything the game is about". You can still tackle strong, legally. Look at Geary on Patton last week.

Yet gutlessly punch a bloke whilst they're not looking (as a repeat offender) and get another slap on the wrist.
Yep, makes plenty of sense.

And surely there is some onus on the player being tackled to brace for impact if their arms aren't pinned.

I am about to feel real dirty here but Spargo has a point. Yeah Scott Thompson is a flog at times, but Camerons little gut hit deserved a week. I thought Waite was always in striff only because thats the pattern for his entire career. Find form then get suspended, but in this case Lynch was turning as well.

personally i think trying to outlaw the sling tackle is fine by me. happy with stevens and waite getting suspended.

But I do agree that cameron should have got a week. Anything behind the ball and graded as intentional conduct should be a week minimum, no matter what the impact is graded as

Really poor by LT, he'll cop his fair whack - I'd say 3-4 weeks.
This doesn't help his returning to the senior side anytime soon.

And it was a rookie on the receiving end, funny how someone smaller than him threw around like a rag doll afterwards.

I've tried to like the guy over time but just cannot bring myself to do so.

Rumour a couple of weeks ago that he is looking to return to Adelaide to play for Port, as a former magpie junior.

I agree with trying to outlaw the sling tackle, but in these two cases:

- Lynch was primed to be dumped due to his balance being out whilst trying to kick the ball in the tackle

- Wilson had a hand free and could have released the ball and used the hand for protection when hitting the ground

As unfortunate as they were, imho, they are aspects that were beyond the control of Waite and Stevens.

All the rule changes in the world are never going to completely eradicate accidental concussions or other forms of injury.

The positive aspect of this rumour- it came from a credible source, none other than Kane Cornes
