3 wins no losses so I'm not complaining because we lost. Gripes are with umpires turning up asking the coaches to teach them the rules (U8s). Thats not on im my mind especially since we said one of the conditions of moving over was an increased standard of umpiring. So far we are not getting it.

this was a common occurrence round 1 in junior levels i believe - we had no one turn up to TTG Under 7s and was just told to "get the coach to do it".

round 2 was fine though and to be fair the umpire was pretty good - only a young kid but did well IMO.

must have been the U/8's turn to miss out on umpires this week, none for Broadview's 2 teams

To be honest with you it was a factor of why I stopped umpiring juniors, the rule variances from age group to age group was ridiculous and then they'd chuck you in a foreign grade with no notice.

Doing a Under 6 game then an Under 16 Red game straight after on a Friday night then an 11's and then a 15's on Sunday threw my brain out.

Chuck in a couple of Saturday country games and a SAWFL match on the Saturday night and I'd be cooked.

Think one of the issues is that there must be a mentor umpiring with the young umpires in the higher grades where points and finals are on offer. This impacts the numbers of umpires available for the Under 11 and below age groups.

Heard on Friday night they were short of umpires for Sunday's games!

we played Broadies U8's on the weekend. Which game - we were at the Southern end of the ground at 9.30. That might explain why he wasn't prepared to umpire.

I heard a story yesterday that the SANFL umpires coach had said they were 40 umpires short (don't know how long ago this was).

For $40 bucks an U8's game, I should do it myself!

Great $ for a 13 yo, if he does 8's and 10's over 2 hours on a Sunday morning he makes around $55.

Hmmm might need to look at this, he plays footy at 12.20pm on Sundays so that would be the only restriction.

They'll work around that and give him games close by, there's always a shortage of umpires wanting to do Friday night games too.

There's a lad in the APFL that gets over $500 tax free money each weekend from umpiring, I used to cash in a bit with it too across 3 different competitions sometimes 6 or 7 games for the weekend.

Are you serious, if you are I am so embarrassed for you
- your giving us your win loss ratio in under 8s
- your last post labelled the umpires deplorable, in under 8s. Under 8s...are you serious
- you have issue with the young umpires seeking out some advice prior to the game from those that should be mentoring

I hope you win the Premiership and they appoint Ray Chamberlin to your games

Seriously buddy, in week two of the season you are going to probably have a teenage kid doing his second game ever and under 8s is the perfect environment for everyone involved to develop. Take a deep breath and try and have a little understanding and analytical ability and everyone will benefit in your junior football environment.

To be fair, the rules vary quite a bit between U8s and U9s (Zones, tackling, pressure, standing the mark, bounces etc).

Wouldn't you rather an umpire clarify rules so everyone is happy, rather than umpire how he thinks and potentially cause a shit storm?
