Jacob Shephard?

Also out of curiosity, what's the '19' on the front of Pulteney's jumpers mean?

Correct Shephard was red carded for dangerous tackle. Also what is the rule on club umpires over ruling goal umpires?

Field umpire always has "right of way" on score decisions. Goal umpire is essentially there to signal the result and record it, or provide the field umpire assistance on the call in the event the field umpire didn't see it.

You will see field umpires say all clear to the goal umpire with both hands up (goal), one hand up (point), or no hands up (didn't see it, you're call).
The third instance is the only time the goal umpire gets to make the decision.

So a field umpire who is standing at the 50m arc makes the decision for a goal umpire who is standing at the goal line? There is no way the field umpire can say conclusively that the goal umpire got the decision wrong.

12.1.5 Goal Umpire to Judge Goal or Behind
(a) The goal Umpire shall decide whether a Goal or Behind has
been scored but may, before deciding, consult with the field or
boundary Umpires or the official scorer. The decision of the goal
Umpire shall be final. The goal Umpire shall only signal that a
Goal or Behind has been scored when the field Umpire signals
‘All Clear’ or ‘Touched All Clear’, as the case may be.
(b) Law 12.1.5 (a) does not apply if a Controlling Body prescribes that
a field Umpire may overrule the decision of a goal Umpire who has
not been appointed by the Controlling Body

OVERRULING GOAL/BOUNDARY UMPIRES
"Field umpires should take the time to consult goal/boundary umpires if there is a questionable decision. If the goal/boundary umpire is a League appointed umpire and is 100% sure of the decision, that goal/boundary umpire has the final say. If the goal/boundary umpire is a club appointed umpire and the field umpire is 100% certain of the decision, the field umpire has the final say."

I have seen a few goal umpiring decisions reversed in my time and i give them full credit for taking control (very rare in these divisions).

Ive came across a few less than honest club goal umpires in my time..

Correct, for Chris Adams who once kept Shane Scudds from Golden Grove goal less or near enough to at Harper's in a final

I can understand a field umpire over ruling a "touched of the boot" decision. I find it ridiculous though that a field umpire can overturn a decision about the ball being either over the line and potentially being touched on the goal line. I also find it hard to see how the field umpire who is a club umpire not someone put in place by the league can overturn the decision by a club goal umpire who is clearly in the best place to make the decision about the ball going through the behinds or goals. I understand that there may be some less than trustworthy goal umpires but seriously what's the point of even having them there if the field umpire who is 50m away is going to take charge over something he can't be 100% sure himself. Let's be honest most of the umpires at this level get field decisions incorrect so why would they be able to make the correct call on something their not even employed to do.

Change of topic McIntyre doing a knee is tragic of true you hate to see anyone have that happen but probably even more so the leagues gun players

Interesting part with the 100% bit.

I had a weird one a couple of weeks ago in an A Grade game. When it all came out in the end we probably got it wrong.

A dude had ran into the goals after an "advantage" free and appeared to have goaled from about 25 out on a 45 degree angle, the oval was east-west and I was about 45 out directly in front with the sun directly in my eyes, I put both hands up and said "all clear", the goal ump signaled goal and then all the defenders in that pocket spat it.

The goal ump has been doing it for quite a few years and is well respected but admitted he was probably caught out of position, i heard about it for the rest of the match.

I've done a fair bit of goal umpiring and this is what I got taught.

Well call them "Gracey goals". Even during training if one was close its a "Gracey goal".

In all fairness Gracey is as honest as they come but its snuck into MP vernacular.

Think back the goal umpire in to do his job.. unless the decision is horribly and clearly incorrect, in which case the field umpire should change it.

50/50 calls though, or any doubt, just leave with the goal umpires decision.

We had a call v Pulteney in the last quarter the other week where the goal umpire called touched before it crossed the line - the players spat it saying it was over, but as i said to them after - you don't know that 100% so shut up, and next time kick it further :D
