I watched it on TV though.

And that attitude is just one of the reasons a match between a real SANFL team and an AFL Reserve Team doesn't justify being dignified with attendance..

Fair enough. Those Norwood fans are unbelievably annoying.

With Brian Lara's world record within reach I think we need to lift the run rate a little and get there before EOFY.

Postby The Dark Knight » Sun Jun 04, 2017 1:50 pm

Yesterday we (North Haven) played Eastern Park at Thebarton oval. There were three guys who had come to watch us fully dressed up in all their Magpies gear. I recognised these guys after seeing them at Port Magpies games years ago. While these guys are disabled they are passionate Magpie supporters and obviously love going to watch footy and dressing up in the black and white. I made the effort to have a chat with them and thanked them for coming to watch us. I asked them what brings them out to watch North Haven and they replied 'to watch the real Magpies'. I said what about the SANFL Magpies and one of them corrected me and said 'you mean the Power'. I asked them what do they think about the reserves in the SANFL and they said they don't like it and they don't go to watch the Magpies anymore because of it. One of them said the last game they went to watch was the Port Magpies last game in 2013.

Reading this thread has been entertaining the last couple of weeks with Morell's input, it's been an interesting debate and I think he has made some very valid points. I don't like the Magpies being the Power reserves but that's the way it is now and there's nothing I can do about it. Just have to accept it and move on but what I came across yesterday is sad. I did feel sorry for those blokes.

I've been shot down dozens of times in the past 4 years for saying the people I feel most sorry for with this AFL in the SANFL debacle are the real die hard Maggies supporters with no club left to support, looks like I was partly wrong, they still have North Haven

You shouldn't be shot down, a lot of people including myself do to. They had one of if not the proudest club in Australia only to watch them be raped then destroyed by a soulless franchise created solely for plastic fans. Some people who have no integrity call it moving on but the true and loyal supporters were right royally screwed from behind and I feel for them. RIP original PAFC.

You're right Wedgie but how do you argue with a PAFC supporter that can't see past the "shiny lights of the AFL", truth be known most of those same "Magpies supporters" never or hardly ever watched the Maggies play anyway

Meanwhile, over in the west;

WA's AFL clubs lock in Perth Stadium deal

Joe Spagnolo, PerthNow
June 4, 2017 12:00am

THE Eagles and Dockers have agreed to a deal of up to 50 years with Perth Stadium operator VenuesLive, signalling a breakthrough in the long negotiations to stage AFL at the Burswood venue next season.

Details of the deal, agreed to in principle this week during a two-day meeting between the parties and the AFL, are being kept secret but relate to commercial issues, such as how much rent and hire fees the two clubs will pay VenuesLive.

It is understood one of the terms agreed was that the clubs would be allocated 50,000 seats for their members, while the remaining 10,000 seats would be carved up between visiting teams and the general public.

So-called super memberships, which allow cashed-up fans to purchase a seat to every event at Perth Stadium, would be included in the 10,000-seat figure.

The signing of the user agreement was now expected to happen within weeks. VenuesLive chief executive Mike McKenna said the agreement had been a long time in the making.

“To be fair, it has been progressing steadily for a few months but we have got to a point now where there is virtually nothing left (to negotiate) on a commercial sense,” Mr McKenna said.

“Now that we have got to this stage it needs to be reviewed by the State and get feedback. But, yes, we are happy with this.”

A Western Derby is set to be played at the new Perth Stadium next year after a deal was struck with WA's AFL teams.
There remains one more hurdle to AFL games being played at the new stadium next year — agreement on an annual $10 million deal between the WA Football Commission and the State Government to fund local football, which should be finalised this week.

Premier Mark McGowan confirmed yesterday AFL boss Gillon McLachlan would fly to Perth on Tuesday to attend a meeting between the State and the WAFC about the deal.

Mr McGowan, who revealed the official opening of the stadium would happen in January or February with a free event dubbed People’s Day, said he wanted the deal locked in.

“I think the offer put on the table by the former government was more than generous,” Mr McGowan said.

“That offer was $10.3 million a year, over 10 years. (The sticking point) is the amount and longevity of the payments. (The WAFC) wants 50 years of

indexed payments of more than $10 million. So, I’m not happy about that.”

The WAFC, which owns the Eagles’ and Dockers’ licences and still has a 72-year lease on Subiaco Oval, declined to comment.

The Eagles, Dockers and AFL also would not comment. Sources said the WAFC was of the belief the Government should honour a commitment made by former premiers that WA football would not be financially disadvantaged by the new stadium.

Mr McGowan said the WA public would be invited to visit the stadium for free early next year to mark the opening.

I love, just love it how people who have never followed Port Adelaide, SANFL or AFL, tell Port supporters how to view our club. I love it.

In reality it means **** all because we don't give a flying **** what you think, but the entertainment value is enormous. You keep it up lads, you keep it up.

It is a sign of my respect for the Magpies and those supporters that have been alienated by the Power's take over that I do not forget that they are probably suffering more than I.
But hey, you speak for ALL Port supporters and I obviously have no idea about human nature whatsoever, as there is only one type of Port supporter. YOU, right?

I would suggest I'm more reflective of the average Port Adelaide fan than morrel, for instance. Morrel is, for mine, a little more "right wing" in terms of his thoughts on the matter. Not many Port people I know are as definitive in their thoughts as he is. His call.

I've posted numerous times the loss I've felt since the Magpies became our AFL players SANFL base, only posted some weeks ago that my "We exist to win premierships" shirt is no longer true, it hurts, but it's the price we have paid to be on the national stage. From Alberton to the world. That's not something new to my posting on the matter.

So, yes, those of us who feel that way are indeed suffering more than you, however, many of us choose to feel good about the AFL side, the Adelaide Oval in full flight, China etc etc than sit and reflect, morosely, about what might have been. What it is, is what it is.

I think you'll also find many of the Magpies who felt truly alienated ( many of them Magpies players from the 80's/90's ) are coming around to the feeling of the unified club. It's either that or, in my view, be a piss weak supporter and just walk away.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Postby morell » Mon Jun 05, 2017 10:27 am

I feel for the Port supporters that haven't been able to move on, must be very sad to be so bitter. You can't help negativity I suppose!

The Port Adelaide I grew up supporting was always looking to be the best, always looking for the ultimate success, was constantly striving to be the most successful senior football club in the land. To do that, we had to move to the best competition in the land. It was a natural and entirely understandable progression. Port Adelaide are playing in the AFL, so to those Magpie fans, come along to a Power game, just try it. See how you go.

Now, I have put up with a lot in this thread of late, bit of name calling and stirring up is fine as I understand that most are merely misguided and perhaps a bit naive - so I do tend to poke fun and perhaps offer a little bit of brevity.

But. For the admin of a site called "safooty" to state things like this:

raped then destroyed by a soulless franchise created solely for plastic fans.

Is beyond the pale.

1. To use sexual assault as analogous to football comings and goings is honestly pretty disgusting. Go **** yourself.
2. You are not a Port Adelaide member or supporter, you don't get to tell us where our soul is. Go **** yourself.
3. Come and stand on the hill and tell me and my mates that we're soulless fans. All of us have been supporters for decades. Go **** yourself.
4. Your meager attempts at a false and revisionist history to undermine the Port Adelaide Football Club does nothing to hide your obvious resentment. You just come across as a sad old flog. Go **** yourself.

The above is why I loathe so many SANFL people. Instead of being respectful and engaging with fellow football people, Port or not, you blatantly alienate and ostracise. I'm the perfect candidate to go to SANFL games. I'm soon to retire from local footy, I'll have spare time, I like football, maybe I would come along to more and more games, but this above just makes me want the entire league and it's clubs to wither and die.

That sort of pissant state league level bullshit is really whats hold your league back. You're specifically and actively reducing your market. People hear dudes talk like that about the clubs they love (AFL) and figure the SANFL is only for the old school die hards - so why would they bother? Forget about the AFL Reserves. I'd start focusing on this attitude and public relations as the first and easiest problem to solve.

But aside from all that, you can have your thread back. All the best.
