Adelaide Crows 2017

Talk on the national game

Gunston is really the only one that we potentially could have kept. Danger would probably be getting less money at Geelong than the crows (though he is everywhere in the media over there)

Bock and Davis were never staying given what they were offered - and we tried to pay Tippett overs to stay. We were just dodgy as hell about it haha

Go home factor pretty powerful, which advantages Melbourne clubs in most situations. But if you follow a professional sporting club, you have to accept the attendant mentality that goes with the sport. That includes a more hard nosed focus on financial reward and lack of club loyalty. Not all players the same and some genuinely want to be 1 club players but it comes with the territory of AFL football. Fans either adapt or decide to go elsewhere.

Probably started back when the Hawks landed D. Jarman, so not a new thing (albeit that's a slightly different example). Would be interesting to compare the other interstate AFL clubs on the same thing. Port appear very good at keeping required players (Stevens and Carr - For different reasons - The only ones leaving that immediately spring to mind).

Brisbane have had their issues over the last 5 or so years, Freo did a great job of keeping Pav but not sure if that meant they lost other players as a result? West Coast?

Sydney with the COLA allowance and the 2 newest expansion clubs probably not apples for apples.

One thing I am impressed with is the ability of this group to still keep up the pointy end of the ladder even with these departures in recent times.

The impact clearly felt in finals though, which is a combination of losing those experienced and/or talented kids, and not either not having a game plan for finals pressure, or recruiting players who can't play that style of game. But I digress...

Whilst Davis has been good for GWS he never really hit the heights that he promised whilst at the Crows.
I thought he would be a top 10 player in the league but hasn't turned out that way.

A premiership this year at GWS beckons for him though.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

Yeah him and Bock probably didn't get to the level their pay checks demanded.

Not sure on the exact circumstances with each of these guys, but it is a reasonable list of former players no longer there. How many of them went to other clubs?

Bock
Dangerfield
Davis
Griffen
Grigg
Gunston
Henderson
Jaensch
Kerridge
Lyons
Maric
McKernan
Tippet
Vince
Wright
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

Probably just about right there. Danger was always going to go and the only time he looked like staying was when Walsh passed away.
Correct re Bock & Davis. Every club was in the same boat when the expansion teams came out.

Gunston would be the one that hurts really, thought he and Franklin were the 2 best forwards in the comp for that 3-4 year period where Hawthorn dominated.

Forgot about Carr, i guess as he ended up coming back. You don't really hear much about the WA clubs having these issues. Correct about the others. Even when Brisbane get back to a strong position again, can see them still having trouble. Gold Coast wont be too far off either i wouldn't think. Although they would have the cash in the cap you would think

Dangerfield, Davis, Gunston, Lyons, Maric, Vince would be the ones that probably could have made a strong impact at the Crows since they left. Tippet would slot in as well, but he is a different story!

Danger - Never going to stay
Davis- Been able to replace him with a gun in Talia and more than formidable Hartigan
Gunston - Would have walked into any side. He is the one they would have missed
Lyons - Only recent. Has played well on the GC for me. Would have only been a depth player, but i believe he has improved well since leaving
Maric - Have Jacobs instead who has been one of the most consistent ruckman over the last 3-4 years
Vince - That was a mistake!

Bock - Fair loss at the time
Dangerfield - Obviously biggest loss
Davis - Hindsight says no real loss
Griffen - No loss
Grigg - No loss
Gunston - Loss, but would Adelaide have ever gotten out of him what Hawthorn did?
Henderson - No loss
Jaensch - No loss
Kerridge - No loss
Lyons - Decent loss imho
Maric - Had waned at Adelaide, the move a good one for all party's
McKernan - No loss
Tippet - Hindsight says no loss. At the time a big loss, and the loss of picks as a result hurt too
Vince - Like Maric, needed the move, was done at Adelaide
Wright - No loss

That list kinda shows the departures in the main not as bad as I'd thought - Did the Crows land B. Crouch or Brown via either Bock or Davis?

Can go further with it to include the likes of Kane Johnson, but again I don't think he was much of a loss either.

It seems a set strategy not to pay big $ to individuals and spread the $ amongst the group. The $'s need to go somewhere so it must mean their below average/average (McKay/Otten) players are getting very well compensated for their standing in the club.

You could take from this strategy that they are happy to do this to remain very competitive in the competition, but possibly never go to the next level of success.

Correct. Adelaide have a reasonably widely known culture of flat payments. It's obviously worked, they're perhaps one of the very few clubs to have never bottomed out in the modern era.

But the con to that it is... they've got the second longest grand final drought in the AFL.

If it were Port, I'd be hoping my club did absolutely everything possible to keep Lever, not just for his output, but culturally as well.

Quantity wise but not quality wise.

Other than Dangerfield (his balls belong to his wife) and Gunston the others in the end haven't been huge at other clubs, Tippett, Lyon, Davis (injury prone) and Bock.

Jacobs, Jenkins and Eddie in
