Yep the AFL apparently has a system of who they ask and this year they are up to the year 2000 winner in Mr J Hird.cracka wrote:Just heard on Melbourne radio that James Hird has been asked to present this years Norm Smith medal. Surely not

Correct.
Grant presented last years as the 99 winner, McLeod did 2015 as both the 97 & 98 winner, Archer presented in 2014, Williams in 2013 and so on.
If Port were lucky enough to make the GF and win it, for the LOL's i'd love to see Ryder win the medal
I'm not sure 100,000 people booing on GF day is a great look, however..

Depends if it was one of the banned 34 who gets the medal...

I sort of understand this mentality, but I disagree for the most part.
Not wanting to engage in a debate surrounding the verdict for the Essendon 34, but any performance enhancing substances taken 5 years ago should not have any effect on the validity of their 2017 achievements.
As far as i'm concerned, the players have served their penalties and are now competing in this seasons competition fairly and legally (unless they test positive for something either this year or down the track). Should one of them win the Norm (highly unlikely in the first place), then prior infractions (especially infractions with no intent to cheat) shouldn't even be a thought.

It's not a matter of showing their support for him. It's his turn on the roster this year
