Port won 30 flags pre 91 & 1 playing in the upper echelon. Those 30 flags should be counted as that was the highest level they could play at.
Don't think they can claim those 6 flags after 91 on their AFL History.
Hey soccer you owe us 45million.

Come on Booney, this is obviously a much more complex post than you have understood it as, I am sure there are other nuances Zip Zap is potentially laughing at that you have also missed.
Loss of cred big fella...

Nah, no nuance. Just the above...crayoned resume...MWAAAHHAAAHH! :D

Try listening to Tom Renn on 5AA in the mornings. Wimbledon may be on, the Socceroos might be playing a last-ditch qualifier, Australian cricket might be about to implode....but never before 'the Crows hit the training track'

You can make any survey give you the results you want. Why not survey club members or survey people coming into the grounds. I wonder what that survey would result in.
I liked the comment by someone responding that Port still has empties bins out at games to support junior development but has no juniors in SANFL anymore.

Alas, the Murdoch paywall doesn't keep uneducated idiots out, they still find their way in.

FOR GENERATIONS, Port Adelaide was the gold-standard in junior football development - its rich SANFL recruiting zones in the Le Fevre Peninsula and the West Coast developing some of Australia's most renowned footballers.

And while those SANFL zones were dissolved in 2014, Port Adelaide's contribution to football development has been reborn through its new Next Generation Academy program.

Through this, the club is able to develop talented footballers in selected territories of South Australia.

They include the club's traditional 'heartland' areas on the west coast and around its Alberton base.

But it also includes the zones of its 'aligned' SANFL clubs - Norwood, West Adelaide, South Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens.

This means Port has access to developing footballers from these clubs - zones that spread south to the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, the Yorke Peninsula and Mid North, the Riverland and the metro region from Norwood up through Lower North East Road towards Tea Tree Gully and Greenwith, from Parafield and Paralowie up Port Wakefield Road, and the inner western suburbs south towrads Noarlunga and beyond.

The current Next Gen Academy has access to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and migrants from African and Asian backgrounds.

Port Adelaide's SANFL and Next Generation Academies Manager Shane Grimm says this program is the first step towards and exciting football development future for the club.

"Next Gen Academies mean Port Adeladie can get back to having an involvement in the development of talented juniors in SA and help improve the state's elite talented," Grimm said.

"It also allows us to introduce people from culturally diverse background to Aussie Rules and have a genuine involvement trying to develop players from Asian and African background who could potentially be drafted onto our list.

Port Adelaide will also begin to ramp up its involvement in female football development, with its first female academy starting by the end of May.

"Our female focus is comprehensive, and the first step we'll take is through our Under-18 female talent squad," Grimm said.

"We'll be value-adding to existing SANFL talent programs at West, South, Norwood and the Eagles, and will have elite talent programs for boys and girls from these SANFL clubs starting up in June."

Interesting happenings in the VFL

A LEADING VFL coach has urged the AFL to step in to overturn AFL Victoria's decision to banish the state league's reserves competition.

AFL Victoria announced the news on Friday, but the eight VFL clubs fielding a Development League (DL) team this year braced for it for the past month, particularly since last week. Frankston's pitch on Monday for re-entry to the VFL included not entering a DL side.

Sandringham held a meeting on Tuesday night to discuss potentially ending its alignment with St Kilda, which started in 2009, in reaction to the looming verdict that means fewer opportunities for non-AFL-listed footballers.

North Melbourne and Werribee are going it alone next year rather than having one side together, so there will be extra spots on their respective lists.

But Williamstown coach Andy Collins, who played 212 VFL/AFL games for Hawthorn, told AFL.com.au the DL's demise "saddened" him and he slammed the decision as "reactive" and "poor".

"The DL was a huge chance for young men to mature as people and footballers, in what I would call a very boutique competition designed for 18-to-21 (year-old) kids who missed out on being drafted," Collins said.

"They say they want to build the game, but we've lost eight teams of men's football – we haven't created another eight teams," Collins said.

"We talk about Frankston coming back in and North Melbourne and Werribee will need a few more players … but there will be about 120 talented young men spat out of footy, and they may not have a footy home now."

AFL Victoria chief executive Steven Reaper blamed financial difficulties and a lack of administrative resources among the reasons for ratifying the VFL executive's recommendation.

"With only eight of the 14 clubs fielding a development team, scheduling difficulties have grown each year; adding pressure to staff and volunteers with games increasingly being played at different grounds and often on different days to senior VFL games," Reaper said.

"The cost of running the DL currently sits in excess of $1 million between the competition and the clubs, and this is both not viable nor the best possible use of investment into the future, when we are seeing clubs experience financial difficulties."

Collins rejected Reaper's suggestion the DL was a financial impost, saying the competition's costs were only a "small percentage" in the sport's overall budget.

"It sounds like a lot when you talk about our home loans, but in the bigger-picture spend on football annually, it is such a small amount – it's like a pimple," he said.

"That's where the AFL, the custodian of the game, needs to really assist in people making great decisions in the best interests of football and not just what's in the best interests of a footy league.

"This decision seems final, but if I was the AFL, I'd be giving AFL Victoria some extra resources."

The fear among clubs, especially those with AFL alignments, is there will be too few playing opportunities to encourage footballers to pursue the VFL pathway. VFL clubs will have to foster a strong feeder system with grassroots clubs, where the increased leftover players will filter to.

Collins is concerned about how much work will be involved in tracking players who miss senior selection and are then "scattered" across community football.

AFL Victoria will reveal on August 7 whether Frankston was successful in its bid to return after a season out of the VFL, but no other licenses will be considered for 2018.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

Was gonna have a whinge about this the a couple weeks ago. Another pretty standard night for Channel 7 - sports report had two minutes of Port players filing through the airport then later had the one of those roundups covering numerous where they were so good as to show two highlights of insignificant events such as Wimbledon and one of the ENG/SA Tests.

Not arguing that the actual games don't deserve top billing on the news, it's the comparatively unimportant other sht!t that gets high a priority, and a main reason why I very rarely watch the 7 or 9 news or follow a South Australian AFL club.

BREAKING NEWS

"We interrupt this live coverage of Tropical Cyclone Frankenstein to report that Tex Walker has just bought a hotdog from Wendy's. Let's cross now to Andrea Anderson in Rundle Mall, where a small crowd is now gathering to see if he has used tomato sauce, mustard or both.
We'll be back in Darwin following this story to see if the handful of buildings not yet obliterated by Frankenstein's menacing winds are still standing.
Over to you Andrea!!!"

"Yes, thanks Harry! Well it's fun, fun, fun here in Rundle Mall...."

Crows have the Andrew Mcleod Academy program for the same population (indiginous and disadvantaged backgrounds) Couple of Glenelg players are involved in it as Glenelg is aligned to the Crows.
