Now it's going to be a postal vote that won't count.

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

I do wonder though if there was a vote on same sex marriage that was supposed secret ballot, how many people would vote against same sex marriage, Ilis there a higher proportion of people who would vote against than the polls indicate because they can vote without being labelled as a redneck, bigot etc Etc...

Interesting question and I think your views on it sum it up. A Christian man who has no issues with SSM, suggests people like me who don't identify as being of faith and a small portion of those that do can't see the problem. I think it would get across in a landslide. That being one reason, the other being a message from Joe Public to the pollies to stop ******* around and get on with it.

Pretty simple, come up with a suitable name besides marriage, the Christians, the non Christians, the lovers, the fighters, the left, the right, the middle, will all be happy and it wont cost a cent.

You can already get married in a non religious civil ceremony

I can't believe the government are spending over a 100mil of our money on a vote which to be honest laughable and backwards. How does two people who love each other, regardless of gender affect anyone? I'll answer it, it doesn't... people complain it will ruin the sanctity of marriage, but tv networks pump out such dribble as the bachelorette and married at first sight. Anyone who genuinely opposes ssm needs to get over themselves and get with the times...
Just pass ssm in parliament and save the coin

That's the interesting thing about all of this
There is an element of very conservative left who oppose it as well
I did hear their names but can't remember them

In addition, you have Atkinson here in SA who continues to actively oppose voluntary euthanasia and reform of prostitution laws till death do him part
Kenyon is the same, and said his stand was influenced by his religious beliefs and the concept of euthanasia was fundamentally flawed.
Funny how they are all for sticking to some tenets but not others.

Look on the bright side of this....if someone decides to whinge about the result of a vote in parliament you can fire back at them did you vote? If they say no then tee off on them for not standing up in what they believe in. If yes and they were on the losing side say suck it up Princess you were out voted!

Those who identify as Labor because of the traditional industrial/workplace meaning of the word and the associated notions of equity and fairness for workers, but who also have religious convictions and thus are socially conservative on issues like abortion, gay marriage, etc. For example, there's a strong tradition of support for the Labor party among Catholics, who were working class back before and at the time of federation.

This wouldn't be the same Atkinson who likes male on female boxing by any chance? Don't forget Gentleman Jack Snelling, sent a lovely letter to my mother once arguing against introducing voluntary euthanasia not long after the old man pegged it after a long debilitating illness.

Is that correct?

Correct
Thanks mate, I thought that was the case. Seems like a No will be a No whereas a Yes will be a maybe but probably not.

yeah, sadly i get this feeling a bit too. if it is overwhelmingly yes, i think they will have to pass it. however, if it is closer but still yes, or there are a lot of non voters or something, they will try to worm out of it.

all of this money and trouble just so the liberal party can protect their donations from all of those conservative groups. passing legislation is only their frigging jobs ffs. as mentioned earlier, there was no plebiscite or referendum to send our own soldiers off to die in any of the wars we have been involved in, no public vote on the vast majority of other topics. claiming that as this is "such an emotive topic for so many australians" is just a cover to keep their donors happy. there are a great many emotive topics they already make decisions on every day.

its all so easy to just waste millions of dollars when it isnt theirs......

Most of us don't give a shit and it won't change our lives. Even the no voters will admit that.

So surely it's a no brainer for the small but significant section of our community where it really REALLY matters.

Same with indigenous recognition. I personally don't fee strongly about it but there are plenty that do. And my life is going to go on just the same

To keep both sides happy why not just have a separate gay marriage act which is identical to the current marriage act except it's a union of 2 people of the same sex

The marriage act never used to make reference to the sex of the participants until John Howard changed it
