I had this dilemma working for a muzzie fellas landscaping, hadn't met his wife (or knew their religion) when she rocked up I thrust out my hand & introduced myself completely ignoring the burka. When he rolled up I asked him his religion (in a roundabout way) told me he was muzzie & I apologized in case it was untoward, he told me only the nuts get offended by that.

First time I meet a woman I shake hands, unless she initiates a hug
Subsequently, I'm guided by her body language.

Some of my longer term male friends and I hug each other - and I'm not just talking about my Gay friends.
(If you are anxious about hugging a close mate or a known Gay friend you are probably insecure about your own orientation.)

Don't think anyone would be offended if you were genuinely just trying to be nice and didn't realise etc - as long as you are respectful

Every meet with a male, irrespective of setting, I will always offer a handshake.

In a formal setting with females, I will offer a handshake also.

Social settings I tend to let the women dictate on first meet. On first meet with my mate's fiancee, she initiated a hug and I was ok with that.

My female friends and wifes/girlfriends of mates, I will often hug, kiss on the cheek dependant on how well I know them.

You're a true gent, @valleys07. No wonder Mrs. C has a soft spot for you.
