Grand Final Tickets: Dos and don'ts

Postby OnSong » Fri Sep 15, 2017 3:10 pm

*Not sure if there's another threat this fits in

So after the Crows' win in the qualifying final, I went hunting for grand final tickets.

I figured if they don't win the prelim, I could sell them, but the chance of going to watch my side play in a GF for the first time in 19 years meant I was keen to secure a spot early.

Missus put an ad on Gumtree looking for available tickets.

A bloke texted her claiming to be a Melbourne supporter who had bought finals series tickets, entitling them to tickets for all four rounds of finals, including two to the Grand Final.

I spoke to the guy, who claimed to be from Melbourne and working at a NAB.

We had a good, friendly convo and agreed I would pay for one ticket ($400), he would post the tickets that arvo with and send the tracking number.

On arrival of the tickets, I would pay the remaining $400.

I had been advised by the wife to use PayPal but he sort of nonchalantly talked around that and I foolishly bought into the whole thing.

I paid the $400 via bank transfer, sent a screenshot, and he responded saying he had sent the tickets at 3.18pm on Friday arvo.

He did not provide a tracking number at the time.

Monday, Tuesday passed, I check the post Wednesday, still nothing.

I texted him, no response, I called, the phone wouldn't ring, straight to generic messagebank. Tried with work phone, same thing.

We were a bit suss so bit of a background searching and found his facebook profile (not under his real name provided with banking details).

The missus contacted his former place of work (not NAB, he's a landscaper), the HR department said they had his number on file and it was different to the one he was using.

They contacted him letting him know we were trying to get in contact with him.

In the meantime, missus had lodged a police report.

He called the missus on Friday morning very apologetic, claiming his phone had broken not long after sending the tickets, he'd made an error and the tickets had been sent back.

Only issue is we'd contacted others on Gumtree with similar ads to the one we placed advising them of our situation and he'd been in contact with another 'customer' days after claiming his phone had broken, with the same phone number, this time looking for $1000 a ticket.

She informed him we'd lodged a police report, which we would drop, on receipt of a refund, and I'd be calling him to sort it out.

I called him, which he returned and was clearly very nervous on the phone.

He explained it did look suss but it was a genuine misunderstanding and he'd never been in any trouble before other than a speeding fine.

I just said it was not an issue and was happy to just get a refund and we'd leave it there. We'd find other means for tickets.

He's supposed to be sending a refund this arvo. We'll see. Otherwise we'll pursue further.

I have his full name and the phone numbers he used. If anyone needs them, PM me.

Soooooo, what's some of the other stories out there? Anyone else been ripped off before? Any ideas on best ways to get tickets for non members etc?

Also went in 2008. I joined the kids up as country members for $10 each.
That entitled them to enter the draw for grand final tix, won them.
Took my mate over to Melbourne with me, waited for a gate to get busy so they woukdnt notice qe had kids tickets and got in no probs.
Also went in 1994, 1997 and 2011. Had members tix in 97 and 11 though.
94 was a package trip with a bus company.

I pay an extra $100 with my Richmond membership each year to guarantee me a GF ticket should we make it. Never thought I'd ever be able to exercise the option to be honest.

Wife will be 37.5 weeks pregnant when the GF rolls around. If Richmond do get through, can't even guarantee I'll be able to use the ticket. Safe to say I didn't think we were a chance in January when I was doing my best work. ](*,)

When it was manual handing over the tickets a $100 bill would get you in. Gate attendants big payday.

We went in 2009 and paid $3,000.00 for two tickets. That got us into a Grand Final Breakfast at Etihad Stadium. Had Dave O'Neill and Hughesy doing stand up and then had an on the couch type set up with Gerard Healy and a few other blokes. Free piss for 4 hours and a nice meal. Then off to MCG for the footy. Seats were high up in Great Southern Stand (right behind Chappy's goal in the last qtr). It was the best 3 grand I have spent. The missus and I had an awesome day and night. If you pay $2,000.00 you can go to Centre Square. That's even better. Free grog before and after the game. Went there in 2007 with Shell in their corporate box and that was fantastic too (scored those for free through work though).
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

Does anyone have a GWS membership?
I was thinking that would be a great way to guarentee yourself a seat at a Grand Final. Probably even have a chance of getting a ticket even when they are not in it.
Reckon ill sign up next year, surely they make one soon. Never been to a Grand Final

In 2008 myself and 2 others bought 3 tickets for $550 each off an MCG member (from memory).
We drove over on the Friday and had to meet this bloke on St.Kilda road at 8.30pm.

We arrived in the car to a street packed and found the guy on a street corner (like a hooker). We had a bit of a stand off:

"Can we look at the tickets"?
"Show me the money"
"Tickets first"
"Show me the money"

We did the old hand over at the same time thing.

He bolted.

Thought we were F&*$%d.

The tickets turned out to be real thank christ, and I went to my first & only GF.

The result wasnt great, but the experience was fantastic.

Four of my sons mates all joined as Members of GWS this year for that reason, they are guaranteed tickets if they make it.

Last week they even got on oval to help with banner when they played Crows!
