Not sure that the westies squad need a first time coach with no experience -- i believe they will seek a coach who has coaching experience with young players

Present reserves coach gavin colville would have to be a real chance given the performances that he has achieved with a very young and changing on a weekly basis reserves team

From what I'm hearing Scott Thompson is doing everything he can to set up himself for coaching after football. Has done all the accreditation courses, has helped out at Henley FC in recent years and most likely only took his current role at the AFC because of this ambition.

Problem is, does West Adelaide have the cash to remunerate a coach who wants it as a full time position for an apprenticeship for the AFL?

Sad to see him bow out, but deserves all the plaudits that come his way, and hopefully he can overcome his health battles.

As a Uni Lecturer, hearing that Gavin struggles to make the time commitments for the Reserves gig, so may not want the senior job.

All the best to Mark. Got the Eagles back on track with juniors in '98/'99 after the club had lost the plot in '97.

While it seems like a sacking i think you'll find it's mutual.

I reckon if it was mutual, they would have worded it completely different. That would have been a better way of doing it.

My take is that Westies have acted responsibly and with Mark's circumstances in mind. One thing that is clear is that Mark would not be coaching next season due to his health issues.

However, if Mark had have resigned he is breaking the contract. By "sacking" him the Club breaks the contract. This protects Mark from any in-principle consequence for reneging on a contract, and/or may mean the Club is legally responsible for a financial inducement due to them breaking the contract.

His contract was up and the club decided not to renew it.
Plain and simple.
He has a poor win/loss record. That is why he won't be coaching the club next year.

On the ABC News he actually said he was unhappy his contract was not renewed as he wanted to go on.

Yep somethings are more important than footy.
Hopefully he stays within footy somehow to help himself and the club he chooses but his health has to be his priority.

Met him a couple of times and he's a terrific bloke.

Don't normally watch Today Tonight but will be tonight as there's a feature on Mark Mickan and how he's fighting Parkinsons disease. Also a bit on how some friends and footy people renovated his house recently when he went to Melbourne for treatment. Looks well worth a watch.

Saw it on FB yesterday. Brilliant stuff.
As a side note was that Brian Faehse in the footage giving them a hand?
I wasn’t aware he was still going, would have to be in his early 90’s

Yeah I saw that on FB too (I think SAFootys FB page shared it) but the Today Tonight story appears to go much more into his fight with Parkinsons disease, from the ad it looks like he makes some sort of miracle improvement.
