2017 Off-Season

Talk on the national game

I’m happy with the deal. 2x 18 year olds will not help us in 2018 & 2019. Gibbs will.

Forget all the picks 70’s etc.

The deal is basically pick 10 & 16 for Gibbs + 2nd rd 2018 upgrade & 2018 3rd round.

Currently gives us in 2018 which is supposed to be a good draft

Melbourne 1st (early teens)
Adelaide 1st (late teens)
Carlton 2nd (early 20’s)
Carlton 3rd (late 30’s)
Adelaide 3rd

Forget the swapping of late picks or the "points" they add up to, effectively it's Gibbs for picks 10 and 16 which is overs unless Adelaide win the premiership in 2018. Fairly simple equation, hardly anything to it.

Weren't they.

If he does he will get to play against Watts and Motlop. Toumpas surely would have been delisted by then but you never know

Surely a Melbourne based club is going to take Schache?

Crows fans now will feel the same failure as Geelong are currently suffering. Trading for today.
Im not sure Gibbs is the answer.

Time will tell.

Is there a table for these points?
I would be interested to compare the points from last years 2 first rounders, to the combined points for this years deal, and see if this years is 25% less than last years (Gibbs has 3 good years left rather than 4 this time last year).

I'm with Morrell though, no point playing safe and finishing 4th. If you think your time is now, have a crack and hope it works.

Mcgrath was pick 1 and SPP's last half of the year wouldn't have helped the Crows.
My point was more around not many 1st or 2nd year players are the difference between winning and losing finals

Me too, but I'd almost be tempted to say they had their chance and add some genuine individual star power via the draft. Who knows, two quality 1st round selections might have strengthened their 2018 side anyway. But again they know the draft pool far better than I do and Hamish Ogilvie is one of the best in the business.

History suggests that not too many draftees make a big impact in under 12 months, there are exceptions but it is a lot like fishing.

You get pick 74 come out and be an absolute gun where pick 6 could be a dud at AFL level.

For sure there's a lot of uncertainty about any draftee's, but that cuts both ways. Think the Crows will need to add a bit more this draft, effectively losing Lever, Cameron and Smith, with one incoming quality player thus far. Jacobs 30 next season, Douglas 31, Betts 33. Very little cover for the likes of B Crouch and Talia who it would be hard to be confident in getting through the entire season unscathed by injury. Some of that's in the lap of the injury Gods as it is for all clubs of course. Really sounds as though the club has adopted the approach of throwing the kitchen sink at 2018, but positioning themselves for a "top up" in 2019.

In the end when the dust settles. The crows have effectively traded out Lever, pick 16 and pick 35 for Gibbs,a 2018 first rounder (approx 10), and a 2018 second rounder - low 20s.

I think the trades have mutual benefit for all 3 clubs.
