They better redraft him. Not to happy about this

—————

The Sydney Swans have made a further two changes to their playing list for season 2018.

Premiership player Alex Johnson has been told he will not be offered a place on the Club’s primary list next season, however the Swans will strongly consider redrafting Johnson as a rookie subsequent to a medical and conditioning assessment prior to the rookie draft.

The Swans recruited Johnson with pick 57 in the 2010 AFL Draft. It didn’t take the defender long to get a call up to the senior team, making his debut in Round 3 the following year.

Johnson quickly emerged as a reliable rebounding defender, playing 45 games in two years including the Club’s 2012 premiership, before injury struck.

After five successive knee reconstructions and 1736 days on the sidelines, the 25-year-old made a remarkable return to football in Sydney’s NEAFL side this season, however he was unable to break into the senior team.

Sydney Swans Head of Football Tom Harley says it was a difficult decision based on team balance.

“Alex is an extremely popular and respected member of the playing group, and he has worked incredibly hard to get back to where he is,” Harley said.

“While we know Alex is disappointed, he understands the decision and remains driven to play AFL football.

“We will reassess Alex and our list after the AFL National Draft, however in the interim Alex will continue to train with the team.”

Meanwhile first-year rookie Sam Fisher has also been advised he’s no guarantee of retaining his place on the rookie list next season, however he will also continue to train with the team until the upcoming drafts.

The Canberra product joined the Swans as a category b rookie last year and has been developing his craft in the NEAFL.

I know, been fantastic. That’s why I’d be disappointed if they let him go now... It would be his first full preseason without coming off an injury.

From a Refugee Camp to the SCG

Project one million - Aliir Aliir
Amnesty International Australia and C31 are proud to present the story of Sydney Swans footballer Aliir Aliir.

From kicking a handmade soccer ball around the dusty streets of Kakuma Refugee Camp, to booting a leather Sherrin on the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground, Aliir’s story of persistence is inspiring to all.

Aliir’s story is the first released in the ‘I Am Australian’ video series as part of the Project 1 Million campaign, which promotes social cohesion and celebrates the diverse social relationships in our community that bind people together. The campaigns aim to raise awareness for the work of four charities: Amnesty International, All Together Now, The Long Walk and Children’s Ground.

Aliir was born in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya after his parents had fled Sudan to escape a bloody civil war. The family then migrated to Australia where Aliir’s uncle was living in Brisbane. It was here that the natural athlete discovered Australian Rules Football and started his journey to the SCG.

“Aliir’s story, from a refugee camp in Kenya to playing AFL in Australia, is one we can all be proud of. We all want the same things – a safe place to call home, where kids can go to school, where we can explore our interests and contribute to our community,” said Sarah Gooderham, Refugee Campaigner at Amnesty International Australia.

A proud African Australian, Aliir’s story is the perfect fit for Project 1 Million.

Project 1 Million aims to reach, challenge and inspire at least one million Australians, through the power of digital media and positive storytelling, to increase understanding of marginalised communities and increase social cohesion within Australia.

The campaign is using a unique crowdfunding approach to cut through the echo chamber of social media platforms and take the ‘I Am Australian’ message into newsfeeds around the country.

Young duo locked in

Exciting Swans duo George Hewett and Tom Papley have committed to Sydney, signing two-year contract extensions with the club.

In a boost for the team in the first week of pre-season training, the pair will now remain in red and white until at least the end of 2020.

The Swans recruited Hewett, who was the youngest player taken in his draft class, with pick 32 in the 2013 AFL Draft.

Hailing from the country town of Port Broughton in South Australia, Hewett settled in well to life in Sydney but had to bide his time learning his craft in the NEAFL for the first two seasons on the Swans’ list.

Called up to make his debut in Round 1, 2016 against Collingwood, Hewett took his chance at the elite level, playing 48 games out of a possible 50 to become an integral member of the team.

The 21-year-old finished fifth in Sydney’s Club Champion Award this year, behind Luke Parker, Lance Franklin, Jake Lloyd and captain Josh Kennedy.

Joining Hewett in his debut match was small forward Papley, who made a stunning rise from an apprentice plumber to joining the Swans as a rookie at the end of 2015 and becoming a regular in the senior side.

The grandson of former Swans players Max Papley and Jeff Bray made an immediate impact, kicking 29 goals in his debut year.

The 21-year-old from Bunyip in country Victoria pushed into the midfield in 2017 where his hardness, skill and competitiveness were on full display.

Sydney Swans Head of Football Tom Harley says the Club’s excited to have locked in the pair.

“We are rapt to have secured the commitment of both Tom Papley and George Hewett until at least the end of 2020,” Harley said.

“Tom’s development during his two seasons with the Swans has been significant. He came to us via the Rookie Draft to service a specific need and impacted immediately. We love his natural competitive drive and see him playing a large role in the future.

“Meanwhile George’s consistent form and durability over the past two seasons since his debut culminated in a top five Club Champion finish in 2017.

“The fact that George didn’t debut until his third year with the Swans is a credit to his character and resilience. He is an extremely trusted and respected member of the playing group.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to seeing Tom and George continue to play strong football and develop as future leaders.”

Hewett and Papley join Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills, Sam Reid, Will Hayward, Zak Jones, Oliver Florent, Jordan Dawson, Lewis Melican and Darcy Cameron in recommitting to Sydney in 2017.

Draft Wrap:

The Sydney Swans have added to their exciting crop of young talent, recruiting three new players at Friday night’s AFL Draft in Sydney.

With the Swans’ first selection, No. 14 overall, the Club swopped on left-footed rebounding defender Matthew Ling from the Geelong Falcons.

The 18-year-old, measuring 183cm tall and weighing 75kg, is lightning quick who has great vision and clean hands.

Joining Ling in Sydney will be school mate and Falcons teammate, Tom McCartin (pick 33), who is an exciting key position prospect.

The younger brother of St Kilda’s former No. 1 draft pick, Paddy McCartin, is a strong-marking, mobile forward who impressed at the recent AFL Combine.

With Sydney’s final pick in the Draft, No. 53, they selected Ryley Stoddart from the Eastern Ranges.

Stoddart is a poised medium defender with good pace, who’s clean and a neat ball user on his preferred left boot.

Sydney Swans Manager – List Strategy and Recruiting, Kinnear Beatson, says he’s rapt with the new recruits.

“You come in with a plan of what you want to execute at the Draft and we were able to do that so automatically you’re happy,” Beatson said.

“Both Matthew and Ryley will bring some run, they’re both left-footers, they’ve got good pace and they carry the ball.

“Tom is a developing young forward who’s in Year 11 at St Joseph’s College in Geelong. We just love the presence that he plays with. He takes front position, he fights hard for the ball, provides a good option up forward, he’s got a big tank and runs big distances as a centre-half-forward. As such a young guy, we just really like the way he plays and his hardness.”

The Swans also finalised their rookie upgrades, with Lewis Melican and Colin O’Riordan joining the senior list for season 2018
