INS and OUTS for 2018

Port will go backwards this year IMO at SANFL level. Have lost a lot of SANFL experience and brought in a heap of light framed kids who get a quick initiation to the big bodies in the SANFL

That's another thing. How can a player who is 29 and played 205 AFL games in 11 seasons be classified as a ROOKIE?

Definition from Merriam-Websters

Definition of rookie. 1 : recruit; also : novice. 2 : a first-year participant in a major professional sport. :?
But in the AFL dictionary a rookie is an overworked and underpaid player trying to impress to get elevated to play a game......

EFFEN AFL! EFFEN ROOKIE DRAFT!!

What is the point of having good players?

Don't expect Troy Menzel to return probably go to Eagles or Norwood like every one else. When does cricket season start. That was a very early finish to season 2018.

Why do we bother? Now we know what the F stands for in AFL.

NO AFL IN THE SANFL.

And there it goes, the two things I dreaded most about the draft.
1: Losing a premiership player.
2: Losing a player to a local franchise.

All the best Patrick. Hope you get a regular gig in the seniors, it will really ******* hurt to have you play against us.

I heard on MMM that Sturt has actually contributed 7 to the draft? I have counted only 6 thus far.

This one is tough to swallow. ******* hate how they can just pluck players from their opponents.

I don't know how much longer I can keep the interest level up with all the shit going on with those 2 prick sides.

Is this a bigger exodus across the comp than we've seen before?

Not sure, but it certainly feels like it IMO.

I couldn't agree more. Not only departures but meaningful footballers exiting our state league for local and regional footy or interstate. In all the years I've been involved in the SANFL I've never seen it in a sadder state with little coming from the SANFL hierarchy to support it. There will be major ramifications for clubs if the rot isn't stopped and strategies to lift the SANFL aren't implemented.

One of the major things I have noticed is a noticeable reduction of AFL delisted players signing back in the SANFL once the AFL dream is over.

Some SANFL cubs used to have the press releases drafted up and ready to release post draft day, doesn't seem to happen anymore, hence why I can see the 8 sovereign clubs dropping off and the interlopers benefiting and going deep in the finals.

This might be a reflection of several factors though.

Players in the AFL are now on $300k+ ( average ) and the drop back to the $40-50k ( max ) on offer from SANFL clubs is a pretty serious drop in income. Players at AFL level are now better versed than ever to make a career outside of football before they actually finish up. The money they earn gives them opportunities to invest in other areas of business prior to calling it a day. How many of them per year go into media / coaching roles? Would I also be right in saying the average AFL career is going longer now than ever before? Recruitment, development etc seem to be keeping players at that level longer so they're not 24 coming out of the AFL system but more likely to be 27-28+ and therefore might go down the coaching path themselves? ( Anecdotal only ).

I think there's reasons for this.

The biggest area of concern for me. The noses are in the trough and they're not coming up for air any time soon. Mores the pity.

I think it's more to do with the shutting down of Ports Acadamies over the next couple of seasons and the knowledge that there is a lot of talented young footballers looking for new homes.

IMHO
There seems to be more quality players leaving than arriving at clubs.
Also more going in bigger numbers than newbies.
The U18 comp will not replace this player standard in 2018.
IMHO the comp has slowly lost follower interest, attendance, support and credibility.
Check the average age of attendees at your clubs AGM's!
Not even any radio coverage of games anymore,
plus split rounds, byes, little or nil daily radio, newspaper and small TV coverage,
with low club salary caps.
Players will continue to exit in big numbers to ammos, hills and outer country leagues every year.
Sadly with current SANFL direction it will only get worse.

As long as South Australian kids are getting drafted then the SANFL hierarchy couldn't give a rats.

Stupid because SA has always contributed to the draft pool, so no need to make it the highest priority, but as things stand now (and sadly probably always will) the priority is complete breeding ground, ahead of a strong, vibrant and well resourced competition. That last point could be the ones to get the comp back in lights (in terms of a state league) but probably needs to come from all foundation clubs, all of whom have had their struggles in the last 20 years. Disgrace that the competition and subsequent interest has been allowed to plummet this far.

You mean with Lokan being told what to do, how to do it, when to do it, what to say etc etc. from the Power?
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

Could this be a sign what might happen more in future. Lachlan Murphy was drafted by the Crows. Coaxed over here from the Northern Knights and put on Crows development squad and rookied Monday.
