The Sydney Swans have added to their exciting crop of young talent, recruiting three new players at Friday night’s AFL Draft in Sydney.

With the Swans’ first selection, No. 14 overall, the Club swopped on left-footed rebounding defender Matthew Ling from the Geelong Falcons.

The 18-year-old, measuring 183cm tall and weighing 75kg, is lightning quick who has great vision and clean hands.

Joining Ling in Sydney will be school mate and Falcons teammate, Tom McCartin (pick 33), who is an exciting key position prospect.

The younger brother of St Kilda’s former No. 1 draft pick, Paddy McCartin, is a strong-marking, mobile forward who impressed at the recent AFL Combine.

With Sydney’s final pick in the Draft, No. 53, they selected Ryley Stoddart from the Eastern Ranges.

Stoddart is a poised medium defender with good pace, who’s clean and a neat ball user on his preferred left boot.

Sydney Swans Manager – List Strategy and Recruiting, Kinnear Beatson, says he’s rapt with the new recruits.

“You come in with a plan of what you want to execute at the Draft and we were able to do that so automatically you’re happy,” Beatson said.

“Both Matthew and Ryley will bring some run, they’re both left-footers, they’ve got good pace and they carry the ball.

“Tom is a developing young forward who’s in Year 11 at St Joseph’s College in Geelong. We just love the presence that he plays with. He takes front position, he fights hard for the ball, provides a good option up forward, he’s got a big tank and runs big distances as a centre-half-forward. As such a young guy, we just really like the way he plays and his hardness.”

The Swans also finalised their rookie upgrades, with Lewis Melican and Colin O’Riordan joining the senior list for season 2018

Pick 78 - Quacky McQuackface - one of three brothers, is a work in progress. Can be a little untidy when moving out of the back half, will be a fan favorite with the kids who follow the club, likely to start well down the pecking order.

Academy duo make the grade

The Sydney Swans are pleased to announce Jake Brown and James Bell have been pre-selected as Category B rookies ahead of today's AFL Rookie Draft.

Both players are members of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy program and will now get the chance to follow in the footsteps of fellow Academy graduates, including Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills and Sam Naismith.

Brown, a 19-year-old from Coffs Harbour on the north coast of New South Wales, is a hard-running midfielder/halfback who uses the ball well by both hand and foot.

The versatile player was an inaugural member of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and was part of the undefeated Swans team that took out the Under-18 Academy Series this year.

In 2016 Brown was overlooked in the AFL Draft, however he remained determined to play at the elite level and has earned his opportunity after impressing with the 2017 NEAFL Development Squad – a small group of under-19 Academy players who play regularly with the Swans NEAFL team.

Bell, who’s 183cm tall and weighs 74kg, is a developing, quick midfielder with a skilful right boot.

From Shellharbour in the Illawarra, the talented sportsman relocated to Sydney in 2017 and represented NSW at both under-16 and under-18 level. He also made the 2017 Allies team.

Sydney Swans Manager Recruiting and List Strategy, Kinnear Beatson, says the players have worked hard to get their opportunity.

“Jake and James are utility midfielders who both have good running capacities and have shown through their time with the QBE Sydney Swans Academy their strong eagerness to learn and work hard,” Beatson said.

“In Jake’s case, it’s great to have a NEAFL Development Squad member come through which reinforces our view that we continue to look at our own after their 18th year.

“For Bell, it’s a great reward for having made the difficult decision to give up soccer to pursue AFL and then relocating from Shellharbour – it’s great that he’s been rewarded for those sacrifices and decisions he’s had to make.”

Sydney Swans General Manager Academy, Chris Smith, says both players set a great example for others in the Academy.

“I’m very excited for both boys,” Smith said.

“Jake represents a young footballer who hasn’t had things go his way with injury and missing out on the draft. However, he’s a leading example within the Academy of a young man who is willing and determined to do absolutely everything to give himself the best chance of being on an AFL list.

“It’s also pleasing for Bell who encountered a steep learning curve since joining the Academy but he certainly has the ingredients to continue to develop within our senior environment – he’s a promising prospect for the future.”

Terrible News!!!!

SYDNEY star Gary Rohan has revealed he and his partner are expecting twins but have been handed the devastating news one will have its life cut short.

Rohan and wife Amie announced their pregnancy on Instagram and at the same time revealed the heartbreaking news.

The twins are due in May next year.

One of the twins has been diagnosed with anencephaly, a serious birth defect that results in parts of the brain and skull to underdevelop.

The affected twin not survive after birth.

In sharing the heartbreaking news with fans on social media, Rohan asked for others affected to come forward and talk to them.
He said sharing their story has acted as a type of therapy as they come to terms with the diagnosis.

“(Amie) and I are over the moon to share with you all that we have been blessed twice over,” Rohan wrote.

“Sadly, one of our beautiful bubs has been diagnosed with anencephaly.

“Our brain is very sensitive, so to live our brain must have cushion and protection. Since our brain tells our heart to beat, our lungs to breath, our legs to move and so on, these babies live from a few moments to a few hours after birth.

“Babies born with anencephaly are not compatible with life.

“Ames and I have known about this since our 11-week scan, and since knowing, we’ve been constantly discussing what we should do, how we should tell people and if we should tell people at all.

“We come to the decision that either way, both our babies are beautiful, precious human beings, with the only thing being that sadly ones life is destined to be cut short.

“There are going to be some really difficult days ahead but also many happy ones, and we want to share each and every one of those moments with you all.

“Talking about our situation with people has been our therapy, letting our emotions out has been the best thing for us personally.

“We would love for anyone who has been affected by anencephaly themselves or know of others affected by anencephaly to please contact us.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to us about it. That’s what we want, we want people to ask questions, we want to talk about it with others. We still need questions answered as much as everyone else.

“And at the end of the day, we will always be parents to twins, our journey has just been written a little differently to others.”

Runners-up for Jarryd and Mark

It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for Swans fans Jarryd Haines and Mark Smith who have become global stars after their heart-warming story of friendship and love of AFL went viral.

On the back of hearing about a young boy who was commentating the Swans Round 23 game at the SCG for his blind friend, we started an online search for the unknown duo.

After tracking them down through the power of social media, the boys came into the club for a tour, meet and greet and also ran through the banner with the team at the Elimination Final against the Bombers at the SCG.

Their heart-warming story gathered quite a lot of traction across the country and made its way to the other side of the world which resulted in the pair being nominated for the ‘Best Sporting Moment’ in the Laureus World Sports Awards for the month of November.

The Laureus Best Sporting Moment Award demonstrates qualities such as fair play, sportsmanship, drama and dedication, and looks beyond the scoreboard or podium. The Moments symbolise the true values of sport and bring to life the message that sport has the power to change the world.

The boys were up against some incredible and emotional stories of achievement and strength and after a month-long online vote, finished runners-up, just 8% behind Chapecoense, the Brazilian football team which was torn apart by a devastating plane crash and whose revival and comeback inspired many.

It was an amazing effort by Mark and Jarryd to finish second and showed how many people this story touched.

There was overwhelming support on social media for the boys during the campaign with many AFL Clubs putting rivalries aside to help the boys with votes.

The Club and Jarryd and Mark would like to thank all those who took the time to vote for them, with Laureus informing us that over 25,000 votes went their way!

In a video message the boys sent to the Club, they said:

“Thank you to everyone who voted, unfortunately we couldn’t get over the line but it was an amazing experience nonetheless.”

“We would especially like to thank the Sydney Swans and all their members and fans!”

Yeah I thought it was a bit harsh from him going from 'good news story' to 'see ya later'. Hope the young fella does well. It's tough with those recons though. Menzel for example is still a good player but his mobility has been severely compromised. Who knows just how good he might of been if not for injury.

Must be two Kurt Tippets out there. The one at the Swans hasn’t been effective for yonks.

After a career spanning 178 AFL games, versatile big man Kurt Tippett has announced his retirement from football, effective immediately.

Sydney’s No.8 faced a number of injury setbacks over the past few seasons, and most recently has been working to strengthen his ankle following post-season reconstructive surgery.

Tippett had remained optimistic of returning to full fitness, however the length of his recovery and doubts about being able to get back to his best, led to his decision to retire.

The 30-year-old told his teammates on Monday, saying it was a difficult decision.

“It’s really tough to leave a game and a club which I really love, but the reality is that my body isn’t going to stand up to the rigors of professional football. As I've found out in the past 18 months or so, it's impossible to play at the level you want without being fully fit,” Tippett said.

“I want to thank the Swans and also the Crows for the opportunity to fulfil my dream to play and compete in the AFL. I would also like to thank my teammates and coaches, particularly John Longmire and Neil Craig, and the fans and supporters of our great game.

“Last but not least I would like to thank my family and friends for their love and support over my career. As sad as I am that I won’t play at this level again, I look forward to transitioning into the next phase of my life”

Sydney Swans coach John Longmire said Tippett has been an integral part of the team.

“Kurt has played some key roles for us but has been very unlucky with injury, which is a real shame, because when he’s out on the field he’s been a great competitor,” Longmire said.

“It takes courage to admit when your body isn’t up to playing at the level you want, because players love nothing more than to be out there with their teammates competing each week.

“Kurt has considered what’s best for the club and his teammates when making this decision, and he departs with our full support.”

Sydney Swans Head of Football Tom Harley has thanked Tippett for his contribution to the club.

“Retirement is never an easy decision and I know that Kurt’s decision was not made lightly,” Harley said.

“Kurt has been an exemplary team mate and always put the club first. We wish Kurt all the best for the next phase of his life and he will always be welcome at our club.”

Tippett played 74 of his 178 games in the red and white, including the 2014 and 2016 AFL Grand Finals. He was initially recruited by Adelaide with pick 32 in the 2006 AFL National Draft, before making his way to Sydney ahead of season 2013.

Tippett was Sydney’s leading goalkicker in 2013, kicking a total of 137 goals in his time at the Swans.

DOB: 8 May 1987
Guernsey No. 8
AFL Debut: Round 1, 2008 (Adelaide)
