Played North Adelaide South on Tuesday for my first round in almost a year, shot 95 which i was pretty happy with.

Question from a hacker that only ever has social rounds - if you smashed your ball from the tee down the middle of the fairway, then got down there and couldnt find it - what is the correct play? do you have to go back to the tee and have your third from there? I know thats the rule if you hit it OOB or into the trees or whatever but if you KNOW it went down the middle and still cant find it, it seems harsh to have that happen hehe.

because I only play socially with my mates we just drop another one and hit from roughly where we think we should, but obviously thats not correct

I also realise i dont watch my ball closely enough - sometimes i watch the first bounce and but not really zero in on where i think it is, especially if its not in the trees.

In competition play, in the scenario you have described, ball in middle of fairway, yes back to the tee & hit your 3rd shot. If however the ball went into a hazard (think dam/lake) and you & importantly your marker can agree the point of entry, then hit your 3rd shot from that point.... keeping the point of entry & the flag in a straight line.

For social play, I think you are doing it right, hit your shot from where you reckon it should have been. Public courses, bet you some flog, picked up your ball....

Most social players are the same.... when they have to play by the actual rules of golf, they get quite a shock. Having said that some rules are just plain stupid.

I used to take the game seriously, particularly pennants when it comes to the rules, but I am fairly chilled about the game now. Mainly as I only play 5/6 rounds a year I guess. Playing at Tocumwal next Saturday, as I am in the area for work next Friday..... hoping its not too hot.

being a pedant for the rules just doesnt seem like fun for me. we don't usually gamble on the rounds either so there is no real need to be a stickler for the rules

I guess its a matter of how serious you are about it.... It's like saying, playing cricket on Saturday, but you can't get out LBW.....

In a social round I'm more than happy for people to drop for a lost ball rather than going back to where they last hit it from. It keeps the round flowing and stops you from holding groups up behind you.

I also don't mind moving the ball slightly if you're hitting off rocks/up against a tree to save the clubs. A bit of common sense to keep the round enjoyable - again not playing for sheep stations.

Yeah, I’d have no problem if someone asked me to play by the full rules either, if it was someone who I don’t usually play with

I recall a social round I played with my then next door neighbor a few years ago..... he was a twice a year player, but had some ability, ex baseballer I think. Anyway, we played a rule where you were allowed 1 free "throw" per 9 holes. I recall him underarming one out of a greenside bunker, damn near holed it!

After the foul mouth abuse that was directed my way in another part of the forum, I went out and scrambled ok for the front 9.
Back 9 was ok...up until a slight fade got blown over fence into Caravans.....wipe.
Then on 17...hit the perfect high fade and ended up around 80m....pw in. Decided to try and get the right to left draw shape....well it went left and into water.....ffs
18....decided to take on trees separating 17/18. The height was good...but it was basically just like the stupid poppers I can hit and ended up down the middle of the 18th. Not far enough down to get around the corner and over hazard...so layed up. Left myself a nice 174m, 5i in and lands in a bunker. Sand was hard and just picked the ball nicely for it to go on the other bunker on the otherside of the green....

Ended with 26pts which was disappointing, but given the poor efforts off most tees I probably shouldn't complain....

My almost 20yr old 350cc Proline Impreza joined me for 9 holes today

Conditions were a tad windy which did cause my slice to be a little more exaggerated

Tried a few few different set up positions. Standing closer and legs closer together and that resulted a nice fade that i can live with. Then i changed a grip to be weak and it went dead straight....that was on the 9th and i went straight over the bunkers on the left hand corner of the dogleg....

Heading upto Mt Barker-hahndorf on saturday arvo.
Anyone been there lately?? Looks sandy!!!
