Root is as dull as a rock
Now that's a dud root.

is it for the umpires benefit maybe? if a player bowls from wide in the crease it makes it too hard to judge I guess...

Not sure the reasons but this only applies to the ball pitching outside leg stump much to the chagrin of leggies everywhere. It used to apply to balls pitching outside off also but a posse of players led by Sir Don brought about this change.

Nor am I really other than, if the ball is pitching in line & going on to hit the stumps then you deserve to be out. My guess is, otherwise we would see a plethora of blokes bowling around the wicket, pitching outside leg (to a stacked legside field) and anything going on to hit the stumps, could make for a very quick game....

I mean it's good they get the praise, but over the last couple tests, I've got the distinct impression they're really trying to drive home the point - like they're "brainwashing" the viewing audience about how good the selections are, and how right the selectors got it.
I think its just blatant australian barracking of any form. They were extremely hesitant to criticise the melbourne pitch even though most other outlets were teeing off on it and it was rated as poor.
