Maybe tossing it in was the problem in the first place

You have to wonder if Simon Lethlean's resignation last year was "recommended", or whether he resigned on his own accord.

One suspects it's the former, which will make for some interesting viewing if the rumours are true.

whats the rumours about?

Patrick Dangerfield (former Crows player who has moved to the country) has suggested the AFL draw should be 17 games.

My first thought was no, but, I think this has merit.

Obviously, you play each club once, and who you play at home this year you play away next year.

Everyone on the same terms. Like it.

A logical and fair suggestion which will be scotched by the AFL's accounting and marketing arms.

It also means one showdown per season, which won't be popular, and it also means it'll take another 57 years before we hit the important milestone of 'Showdown C'.

Fewer games means fewer $ to the AFL. Never going to happen.

The full interview/article has him suggesting 34 games with shorter matches. He was asked the question on SEN, how dare he answer them.

2 divisions of 9 teams. play each other twice in your own division, once in the other division. 24 games. top/bottom two promotion and relegation.

top four finals series in each division

its the only structure with roughly the same amount of games that actually makes sense and is fair. it also has the added benefit of making the games down the bottom of the ladder more interesting for longer - if you are 14th you still have a hope of div 2 finals and being promoted to div 1

make it happen now :D

If the AFL didn't create the 2 expansion sides they could have done a 30 game season quite easily I reckon.

Do you want it retrospective so Richmond couldn't make last years Division 1 Grand Final too? :D

Should have left out the Crows, Power, Freo and WC out too,
22 round season, all fixed! ;)

30 would be tough still, with ground availability and the fact that by round 27, a game between 2 bottom sizes would be even less relevant than it is now

thats why i like the division system. creates two grand finals per year too, which im sure the AFL will love

Wedgie wrote:Do you want it retrospective so Richmond couldn't make last years Division 1 Grand Final too?

haha didnt think about that. sure, why not

it is probably the biggest drawback though, that the team finishing 10th or below cant win a div 1 flag the next year, and bulldogs and richmond have both shown that this is possible. but i think thats a small price to pay especially given these middling teams would have more "success" by winning div 2 flags

Think the division/conference method has merit. Split into 3 divisions of 6. Play every team twice in your division then everyone outside of your division once. 22 games in total. Top 2 teams from each team makes finals and then the best 2 records throughout the comp after them round out the top 8.

Divisions could be
Port
Adelaide
West Coast
Freo
2 x Vic Teams

Brisbane
Gold Coast
GWS
Sydney
2 x Vic Teams

Division 3
All Vic Teams

Each team you play outside your division, you play at home one year, then away the following year.

The biggest problem with that setup is it increases the number of irrelevant games, which I think is a big reason the draw should be tweaked (along with it being unfair)

That's always going to be an issue i think. I'm still of the opinion they need to enter a lottery type scenario like the NBA or have a finals series for the bottom 4 teams maybe playing for the number 1 pick

i dont mind the idea of a lottery. but if 9-12 are playing finals every year, then it gives teams down the bottom something to play for

could even indroduce an interdivisional playoff game too - maybe in the pre-season a bit like the charity shield in the EPL. would at least make 1 game of the pre-season somewhat relevant

VFL would have collapsed if it wasn't for the initial expansion :D
They did stuff up by not having a team out of Tassie
