I think it's pretty clear that 100 or more cyclists riding together without the proper road closures, police escorts and physical / hydration support in this weather is a danger to not only the cyclists themselves but the traffic they are hindering.

I'm all for people getting out there and riding, but this event was cancelled for a reason.

From SAPOL : Please don't ride the Bupa Challenge route today! The decision to cancel due to extreme weather conditions wasn’t made lightly by organisers. There will be no facilities for riders including water, food, mechanical support, first aid, and there will be no road closures in place.

Open road, taking their own risk, whats the issue?

If you were driving a car that hit and killed one of these riders because there are no road blocks or safety precautions in place you wouldn't have any issues? Or any of them dropping dead because there are no drink stations or medical support, then that is fine too?

A group of 100 blocking lanes is vastly different to a few riders that you have to change lanes for.

I don't get your point, they are riding an open public road, not breaking any laws, they are taking their own risk, I work in the hills and despite the heat there have been thousands of cyclists riding around watching the TDU, majority of them are from interstate spending big $ in the town.

They are riding up on gorge road which is about to be closed for the TDU race, who would be driving down there today knowing that? They are the idiots!
Regardless of inconvenience to drivers its just plain ******* dumb by amateur cyclists to undertake such an activity today. If it was cricket we would all be sitting at the pub....

Other than breaking the law ( I'd imagine riding 2/3/4 abreast ) and putting their own safety at risk in extreme weather, potentially pulling emergency services from elsewhere, not much.

Again this has been happening all week, they are actually riding today's race route, therefore most are out there to view the race. They would be stopping into multiple shops/pubs/cafe's along the way.

Presuming they are breaking the law I see  (2 abreast is not breaking the law, that's another debate)

Should be law that single file on country roads and always turn out for faster vehicles coming though.

I got stuck behind the mongrels training last Saturday - I did 25km per hour pretty much the whole way from Gummy to Birdwood. With next to no overtaking along the whole way, the asshats wouldn't even attempt to go single file, despite my horn blaring at them practically the whole time.

I'm surprised I didn't end up on some dash cams website or the news for new levels of road rage :?

So they can ride 2 abreast? Didn’t realise that

Unley Road in the morning all week 4-5 abreast especially a group in light blue and red stripes

If 100 of them are riding no more than 2 abreast, I'll concede. ;)

The BUPA ride normally takes off very early, is that right? Obviously to give the punters time to clear the course before the peloton comes through.

With the BUPA ride now becoming somewhat "unofficial" and the Tour taking off an hour earlier due to the extreme heat, what at the chances of the peloton catching the punters and chaos ensuing?

It's silly defending them, imagine if cricket was cancelled due to heat but two teams decided to play anyway, you reckon that would be defended? No, it wouldn't.

Thousands of people ride unsupported right around Australia thru even harsher environments (nullaboor, NT) than the Adelaide Hills (where it is around 37 degrees) every day.

I agree that some of the riders are painful and do not obey road rules or general common sense. I always keep as far left as I can, 95% of the time im left of the white line on the shoulder of the road, and when I ride in a group we always go to single file when a car is coming. Other riders frustrate the hell out of me when they don't do this.

Majority of these dickheads are from interstate, don't blame the locals who most the time are OK.

Regularly happens, the cops/officials clear the road and we have to wait on the aide of the road for 20/30 mins before we can recommence the ride.

This year would have been interesting as the ride doubles back on itself by going up Gorge Rd, heads out to Mt Pleasant and then back down Gorge Rd before climbing Nortons to Uraidla. So the Pro's would be going up Gorge Rd while the Amatuers would be going down.

I rode down Gorge Rd on Sunday for the Ride Like Crazy, myself and a mate actually pulled* to the side of the road as we knew there were 10+ cars behind us and they respected the fact that it would have been very dangerous for them to try to pass, every one of them gave us a thankful wave. Some common sense by both parties is all that is needed.
