Use finals wins as a measurement - fine
Use a Bayes network (as in the actual tool one would use to work this out, not the textbook answer to a multiple choice quiz ) using recent results to predict strength - fine.

Restricting the sample size of that data that you'd run to perfectly align with a pre formed supposition - NOT FINE

I'm arguing against the sample size and timeframe, not the method.
