Easy to say that and while I tend to agree we simply do not have the batting depth to just give them the flick forever.

My question to everyone (not just you AF) that says certain blokes have to go is who do you replace them with? Khawaja and Marsh and head and shoulders above the next tier of Sheffield Shield batsman. Please do your research on who's next in the cue and come up with logical replacements before saying certain blokes shouldn't be selected to play for our country again.

Its a sad fact but TDK is spot on, one thinks alot of pain ahead for Australian test cricket for sometime

As a massive Australian cricket supporter and complete cricket nerd I'm pretty f**king gutted about what's happened in the last week, the way the forth test ended was just the icing on the cake. To go from being right on top of the game during the Ashes and then in the first test here to everything just going to complete st!t is an upsetting disgrace.

It felt like it was only a matter of time before Philander made us look silly, he took 6/3!! Unreal. Him and Ravi Ashwin (and to a lesser extant James Anderson) are very similar in that once they get a sniff and get on top of an opposition everything just falls into place and they just roll through them with complete ease and the opponent is completely powerless to stop them.

Handscomb dragging on for a second time was painful to watch. Was just a sign of how things have gone for the Aussies in the last couple of weeks.

Our batting has been reliant on those two convicted criminals for some time. And sadly Mitch Marsh also checked out same time that Davey Cam and Steve did.

Tim Paine and Pat Cummins are the only two Aussies who have any positives to come out of this series.

Yes these two are the (only) big positives, not just in this series but over the whole summer. Paine hasn't put a foot wrong with the gloves and has been a pretty reliable contributor to the team. And while I was never real keen on him prior to going to India last year Cummins has continued to get better and better since then. Like Paine another solid contributor to the Aussie side and is becoming a real star.

Not historically the 'Australian Way' but time to give youth a go. Maybe we can replicate borders side of 1984.

1. Renshaw
2. Weatherald
3. Head
4. Patterson
5. Maxwell
6. M.Marsh
7. Paine
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Hazelwood
11. Lyon

Yes we will lose some but yes our bowling line up will win us some games.

When Smith comes back into the side there will hopefully be genuine competition. Maybe the dream of opportunity will strive others to perform at a higher level.

I don't like seeing players getting gifted a game but in this sense it's a good idea because after all there's been guys gifted games over the past few years anyway. Selection is flawed as it is.

I'm really interested to see which way the selectors go for next summer.

Khawaja is head and shoulders above the next tier of Sheffield Shield batsmen but Shaun Marsh certainly isn't. I just checked NSW averages. Kurtis Patterson has a better first class average than Shaun Marsh as does Ed Cowan (sure he is now retired). Daniel Hughes first class average is just less than Marsh. George Bailey and Callum Ferguson's first class average are comparable to Marsh. Surely Patterson in particular is worth a go.

Marsh had a good series against England but 163 runs at 20.5 is just not good enough for a man of his experience in this current series.

I appreciate your research RIG.

You'd think Patterson is an adequate choice to play for Australia. I sort of get the feeling someone doesnt like him. I'm still roperable that Maddinson got selected over him (and others for that matter but mostly Patterson as they played in the same team and Patterson was clearly a better option to the unbiased eye).

Mate the Australian cricket team is going to be in a world of pain over the next 12 months so they might as well clear out anyone not up to it currently.
Bring in youth and just give them a go.
Let’s see if Head is any good.
Weatherald, Patterson, Hughes likewise.

Maxwell for mine comes back in as well.
Renshaw stays up the top of the order but not sure Burns opens with him.

Take a chance on Darcy Short like they did with Warner.
If he fails so be it.

The Australian team needs to go backwards before going forwards unfortunately

We are now branded as cheats... a tag that doesn't fit 400 odd other blokes who played within the spirit of the game.
They have brought the Australian game into disrepute. I couldn't care less about other countries and the penalties they've dished out.
This is Australian cricket culture, not Pakistan or England or anybody else.
Precedents start somewhere and 12 months is about right but I would restrict their playing to be only club cricket.

A nice piece of melodrama you write. Their actions literally have no bearing on the reputation of any Australian cricketer to have played before them.

My point is/was 400 odd other blokes didn't resort to blatant dumbass cheating!
Must be convenient to forget Warne was a drug cheat

No room for Ferg?

Not sure that Weatherald has done enough to be gifted a spot ahead of others.

Yep and plenty others as well that should have played for Australia but their time is up and time for change.

What, get beaten by the Kiwis, POMS x 2 & Windies in the next 24 months??? ;)

Determine who the next coach is going to be and work out his style of play for the team - two choices really (Langer or Gillespie).

Then we need to think of the 2019 ASHES and pick blokes who the selectors think have the character to perform in that series.

To use a John Dysonism, time to pick some SAOs and ignore the tim tams.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I'd like to see Burns given a run at number 5, and he should have been there as soon as Clarke retired.

Labuschagne is another who seems to be starting to come on, although I've never seen him bat.

Head and Silk are the two disappointing ones, they should be bashing the door down now, not saying let's play them and see how they go.

Heard a rumor Langer is not as much of a certainty as predicted.

What I heard from an ex shield player is that CA are slightly scared around the implication that Bancroft may not have been as innocent as first thought and that his 'extra curriculum skill' was well known and wide spread in the state scene reflecting on Langer.

Happily to concede this is just rumor though.
