However yesterday morning the mens marathon, scottish leader struggles for over 5 mins, falling over, running all over the road then collapses without any medic nearby, WTF? I know it is against the rules to offer assistance unless the athlete asks for it, but this basically opens it up for someone to die for their sport. Surely the rule could simply be changed to - if an athlete stops running and cannot stand on their own 2 feet they at least get a medic to check them out immediately. They are losing ground by being stationery so they are gaining no benefit, but it may well save their life. In fact why not have a rule if you hit the ground and cannot stand on your feet unassisted you are automatically DQ'd.

I'll grant the organisers a small amount of leeway as across a 42km race you can't have first aid everywhere, but, I would question the spectators who were nearby and the Aussie bloke who ran straight past someone clearly in distress.

The spectators just watched on and the Aussie bloke strode around him. Was awful yet compelling viewing.

I would have thought in the last 5kms of the Marathon you would have your medical team well on top of any situation and able to attend anyone within a minute max.

It was fascinating to see what the Aussie bloke was going to do when he went past, I thought he might have stopped for at least a few seconds to show some compassion/sportsmanship, he still would have won.

Aussie bloke said if he stopped he wouldn’t be able to get going again as he had hit the wall also.

Imagine winning gold by running past him and the Scottish bloke dies.

I feel for the Scot, he gave up a chance of winning the London marathon to race out here for a least prestigious event.
The conditions got to him as it did a few other runners.

My issue is the medics....where the **** were they??
Also they had those big bloody barriers that the Scot was very lucky to have not hit his head on......being so close to the end and knowing that runners do look to balance up perhaps these should have been padded...

I get the rules are that they cant be assisted, one touch of the arm and its all over. But if he stumbles and goes head first into the gutter or railing then perhaps its all over for him.

Its a brutal event.

There were 15 bystanders around him, what's a bloke who's just run the same distance as the guy who's collapsed going to do to help

These guys are racing for Comm Games Gold ffs...not doing the City-Bay fun run...

Exactly. Why should it be on the competitors to look after each other?

Also, they know what they're signing up for and know the rules.

It's like blaming the AFL for someone doing a hammy, and then saying the opposition players should stop to help him off the field while the game keeps going.

He was well in front, the gold was his, he had a chance to show some sportmanship, he didn't.

Marathon is a shit sport anyway, none of them look healthy, most were collapsing as they crossed the line, one went straight into a wheel chair FFS!

Ever run a marathon before and tried stopping near the end and starting again?

What if Steven Bradbury had stopped to help the competitors who had fallen in front of him?

You're really gonna hold it against a bloke for finishing his race at the Commonwealth Games that he's worked so hard for?

F**k me.

All day Saturday I had monsters of human beings trying to put me in hospital. After the game they put on free food and had a chat before we flew back.

Be relentless during the competition. It doesnt make you a shit bloke off the field/track.

Maybe everyone should get a medal at the Comm Games, if this is the mentality towards someone who competes to the standard he's supposed to.

If something happens to the competitor in trouble, it's solely on the organisers, not the competitors.

Couldn't even name the bloke so I can't hold it against him, but if the Comm Games medal is worth more than being a good human then I under rated the Comm games.
