why are runners even a thing.

most interchanges are pre-determined now anyway.

get rid of them and it might mean the better organised teams do even better, which wouldnt be a bad thing

Your a glorified Posty, deliver your message and piss off ffs

Could you imagine in cricket the 12th man coming out to deliver the fresh batting gloves and gobbing off at the bowlers

If you want to run around mouthing off at people then you should get treated like a player and watch someone blindside you with the sweetest hip and shoulder.

1, you've got to be kidding me. 2, if you're bringing out fresh batting gloves you can expect to hear from me.

I've only ever owned one pair of gloves at a time lol

Runners are a joke!! As Benny said there role is pointless these days with most rotations being pre determined

Runners add no value to the game.

So what happens if a coach wants to throw a spare player behind the ball, or start tagging an opposition player, or move their swingman from the backlines up forward? They need to wait til the end of the quarter?

Don't be so daft. Runners are required.

The players are swapping from the bench that often it would be quicker to tell the next rotation on to pass on the message

In a lot of cases now playing a man behind the ball etc is pre determined to a certain scenario anyway

Pretty sure runners don't go out to tell players to come to the bench, structural changes, checking in on an opposition player who is hot, the coach wanting the +1 in defence, positional changes etc are all very much part of the game.

The AFL have clamped down on the time they can spend out there, that's enough.

Huh? A bloke changing in defence sends a message to a bloke in the midfield to pass a message to a bloke in the forward line to drop behind the ball?

The only reason I can think of why we have runners is many players aren't that bright! The last time I did some running (a few years ago) the main messages I was delivering was to remind the midfield to get through their rotations. I am sure at AFL level there are messages with a bit more merit. But I maintain that a fair few players forget what they are out there to do.
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

I reckon your next player rotation on the park would get the message across quicker than the runner who is somewhere else on the park etc etc

They can still go out as many times as required still can’t they?

Instead you have a runner chasing around a bloke to try to get to him the message and then has to run all the way back to the bench to get the next lot of messages, meanwhile 3-4 blokes have rotated during that time

Geez even in amateur rugby union we can pass a coaches message on field very simply

how does every other sport in the world manage it then?

just drill the gameplans into them, or change it at the quarter breaks, or get one of the players coming from the bench to do it

would mean the good on-field leaders are even more important

Most sports use other players to pass a message.....simple

Coach- "Tell Davo his bloody useless and if he doesn't pull his head in I'm dragging him"

Me- "Davo, coach said your ******* shit and his gonna drag you so kick someone"
