Port Adelaide 2018

Talk on the national game

Re: Port Adelaide 2018

My take on in game messages/changes etc having played four different sports at amateur senior level and many different coaches.

Soccer- Most in games tactic changes of any sport ive played whether that be complete formation change messages, positional changes, tempo changes, attacking routes, isolating players, play the ball on the ground, long ball etc etc. Not often a soccer coach doesn't stop yelling out messages for the 90 minutes. Most messages come through players and are delivered at stoppages etc.

Aussie Rules- Most amount of messages I have ever received but generally 50/50 split between strategy/tactics and fluff messages. Half the time the messages were just the general 'keep going mate' 'that's the way mate'......thanks a lot runner if you didn't come all this way to tell me I wasn't going to put in anywhere near as much effort derrrr.

Rugby Union- least amount of messages from any sport I've played but generally the most critical. If a coach can identify a weakness in a scrum, ruck or lineout (which generally players on field may not be able to spot due to the nature of the game) it can have a game changing effect in an instance. Players generally have no issue passing a message from one side of the ground to other through 10 different players. In saying that the average union player is a bit brighter than the average footy biff.

Cricket- had everything from coaches who may as well been on the pitch and captained right through to ones who wouldn't say a single thing to the end of the day.

Sadly it seems Chad still thinks he's part of the action.

His Dad would be horrified. Well I assume he would if he's not a hypocritical wanker.

Don't be so daft. Runners are required.

Might ease conjestion if players are left to their own devices.
same for both teams i dont see the problem in getting rid of them.
Seems to have struck a nerve with Port fans, they seriously dont think Arnfield was a key part of their success do they??

Far from saying it was a key part but was the yap part of the Gowans'?

It's a discussion about runners, I dont think they cause much harm to our game

I use 4 runners, 3 are water boys but a small message why having a drink doesn't hurt.

I hope you have taught them the old 'squirt the opposition with the water bottle' trick. Isn't that akin to a runner running around gobbing off at people.

Runners are required, what if there's a change in tactic, the bench can see stuff the players can't onfield, maybe a rotating tag or they spot something the opposition are doing and need to counteract it.

What about when there's 3 minutes to go and you're up by 9 points, the players get this info from the runners.

I don't think there's much concern with razzing up the opposition as a runner, they can listen and respond or ignore it.

Who are Port likely to take as travelking emergencies? I'm guessing Clurey would be one, but hearing Johnston might be in doubt so not sure who they might take as cover

Ken finally picks a Ruckman and it's the returning Paddy Ryder....from an extended layoff due to an achilles injury.....for a trip to Perth to play on a very hard surface.....any Port fans concerned by this?

Or the players could use there bwwaaaaaaaaains and figure that out for themselves!!!

In most cases the whole bench is standing up screaming at the players anyway.

Clurey isn't named for SANFL duties tonight.

I'd say SPP wont play tonight but will tomorrow as a late inclusion, they will not name him earlier to avoid speculation and media build up.

Mate, quarters range from 23 minutes to 33 minutes, I umpire games with time on and you really have no gauge on how much extra time is being recorded.
Do you think you'd hear the bench from the other side of the ground in the dying minutes at a packed Adelaide Oval or Etihad?
