Curious to know if there are any SA Footy Forum members who are umpires?

I seem to recall one member posting about umpiring in the SFL a few years ago.

First maggot effort for the season under the belt. Knackered, but I don’t believe I ruined anyone’s weekend.

And a very good one at that. Would make a very good coach if he ever decided to go down that route.

Umpired a game today. Was better than my first run. Let the play go a bit and not over-umpire. Made better position and ran the game out ok. Time for a beer!

Just got my 3rd umpiring appointment. Having a run in the Northern Footy League here in Melbourne, it’s the old Diamond Valley League. Must say it’s been interesting to date. In particular the grounds. First game was a trial out at South Morang on an Astro Turf ground. Last week I was on the Merv Hughes Oval (which is the biggest ground I’ve ever umpired on) in the Shadows of the Flemington grand stand to umpire a women’s Div 2 game. Then this Sunday I’ve drawn a juniors game at the Sir Douglas Nichols oval (the guy the indigenous round is named after) before I head to the G to catch the Hawks v Dees game. #beerspaidforinadvance

Ok so last week I had a run in a junior game, under 14's. It was a grading game (must be the way they roll over here) between 2 local clubs, one of which was made up entirely of indigenous players. Pre game I spied a fairly decent ex SANFL & AFL player who had a son playing in the game. As it turned out the game was a draw, with an after the siren point tying it up. One indigenous youngster was a stand out, and it wasn't the son of.

This week I have been given 2 junior games - back to back. So it will be over 2 hours of running around. Going to be a test of both the fitness & concentration.

Am enjoying the involvement so far, and getting a little bit of play money on the side doesn't hurt.

Dear Diary,

2 junior games completed yesterday back to back. Been having a little knee soreness of late. Had the trainer look at it Thursday night, and the suggestion was no structural damage, but a bit of fluid build up in & around the right knee. Suggested to strap, or brace it up, along with exercises to reduce the fluid. Got myself a knee brace (Circa B. Robran 1980) and it certainly helped. Far less painful after the games.

First up an U/12's game. Got a bit of advice from the kids, including one kid who claimed he was the victim of sling tackle.... The kid was spun around 360 degree's did not dispose of the footy, and remained on his feet.... seriously kids watch too much TV!

Followed up with an U/14 girls game. It was awful. Damn near cross country wrestling at times. I am one to give the kids an opportunity to get the ball, and get a kick or handball and not ping holding the ball them for trying. Unfortunately it led to ball up after ball up.

Reasonably warm and I was fried by the last half of the second game. Hard to know for sure, but I must have run at least 1.5 k's for 8 quarters - that's 12k's, and make decisions. It is reasonably challenging.

Having a week off next weekend.

Dear Diary,

Went to see a physio on Friday to look at my troublesome knee. Diagnosis is meniscus inflammation of the right knee. I had the left knee cleaned out about 10 years ago when I tore the meniscus. Reckon this could be heading the same way, so now its a matter of managing it. Robran knee brace helps, laying of the push bike for a while, as the twisting motion to release the foot from the pedal is not helping.

2 Junior games back to back up at Panton Hill. Pretty little place, reminded me of Bridgewater in some ways. First game uneventful. Second game was a fair bit quicker, and the boys were cracking in. I had to ping a few blokes for holding, no eyes for the footy, and a dead set shirt front. I considered a yellow card, but left it in the pocket. Late in the game, copped a spray from a kid after I pinged him for a high tackle..... dragged him back 25 meters which gifted the opposition a goal. Stiff, don't get lippy with me champ.

Had some feedback from an observer (well a senior ump doing the next game) reckons I was running too much (did both games on my own) said to stick to the corridor. Did so in the last half of game 2 and ran them out ok. Probably missed one or two, but all umps do. You can't see through players!

Cash in the pocket, a free feed at the canteen (cheers to the home club) and off to see daughter play in the arvo. Stopped along the way for a couple of very cold Carltons, before seeing La Trobe get flogged!

am bays is a whistle blower down south.

My son is umpiring 2 games on a Sunday, u10's and u12's back to back, he ran 8kms yesterday which is great fitness for him after his footy on Sat. Makes $90 for 2 hours work, great for a 15yo.

He had to send 2 players off yesterday for the first time, one from each team, he handled it very well.

Good stuff Dutchy. I am only guessing at my k's so I reckon 2 games 12's & 14's I am around the mark at 10k's.

Great to learn of a kid at 15 doing this. He will get a far better understanding of the game as well. I noted a post on the weekend reckon it was LMA saying he thought those spectators who sledge umpires the most are those who probably never played the game. Players & spectators would learn an awful lot if they were to umpire. Its harder than it looks.

Dear Diary,

Knee troubles continue. Physio advised me to take a 2-4 week break from umpiring. The local league had already put the plead out, with mothers day one of the hardest days for them to fill all commitments. I was originally appointed to do 2 games, again back to back as the sole central ump. Communicated back to the powers that be, that I needed to back it off a bit. Goldy looked after me & gave me just one junior gamer today. Uneventful game, breeze favoured one end, and scoring into it proved difficult.

So far so good, knee feels ok, and I am lubricating it with a Carlton Draught as I type.

See how it pulls up in the morning. Another physio session Monday after work.

Took the opportunity to have last week off, as it was a bye week for rep footy. I needed it to be honest as my knee is still very troublesome.

Dear Diary,

Knee troubles continue, despite that I officiated an under 19’s game today.

Top of the table clash too. Lower Plenty out to an early lead and I really thought here we go game over. Only to see Mernda work there way back into it and it’s only a point differential at 3 quarter time. Lower Plenty getting the win, despite kicking 15 points (woeful in front of the sticks) as Mernda waved the white flags in the last stanza. Beers, bets and bullshit filled the arvo!

Dear Diary,

Got a text Sunday morning asking me to take an appointment due to another ump falling ill. It was for my daughters Div 3 womens game Sunday arvo. Not ideal but the league was a bit stuck & they knew I would be at the game anyway. I had specifically asked NOT to be appointed to her games, but what can you do?

Played on a small oval, that the council had done some work to during the week. Whatever it was that they did, meant it was a mud heap! Fairly uneventful game, conditions not helping. Did the game with the NFL umpires boss, who is an ex AFL ump. I won't name drop, but for him to be on this oval, officiating this standard..... Its a long way from the G!

At half time I asked him what was the best spray he ever copped at the top level. Said he couldn't recall the best one, but was happy to share the funniest one. It involved Wayne Carey.

Carey to Ump - "Hey, can I be penalized for thinking"

Ump to Carey - "No Wayne, you can't be penalized for thinking"

Carey to Ump - "That's great, coz I think you are a ******* dickhead"

The other one he gave me was Peter Bell..... said he just hated umpires.... with a passion.

Didn't get to ping Miss C, may have missed a push in the back to her..... so she told me in the car one the way home.
