I'm certainly not blaming. But I would not be walking through Princes Park at night.

I think the phrase "victim blaming" is as relevant as "mansplaining".

Its a catchy buzz phrase that you can throw at people when they're talking sense, and you want to try to make anything they say prejudicial.

"You can't say women should make smart decisions for their own safety! That's victim blaming!"

I probably wouldn’t either - but we both admit we would walk some places but not others, and it’s not really for us to judge where someone feels safe or not.

So it's OK if we blame you if your house gets broken into and you get raped? The person who did it, is not at fault at all then? After all you must be pretty stupid for sleeping in your own home alone.

Interesting take.

I for one can see the similarities between sleeping in one's own home and walking through a dark park late at night.

Question - if you hadn’t been bashed would you still be walking home? I bet you would and you would have a very different opinion.

Not sure the area you live in but I don’t think there are too many areas in SA that are inherently too dangerous to even walk

Dark parks at night are inherently dangerous - no way would I be going into Dead Man's Pass at night. No way would I be walking around the South Parklands at night. No way would I be walking through Fremont Park at night. It is just stupid to think you can walk through these areas with complete safety.

I still walk home from the pub in Gawler, to my house at Evanston Park, even though random attacks have occurred, and I can tell you I keep to the main road and keep my eyes open. Why would I put myself in greater danger by walking through parks and dark areas just because I have a right to walk around unmolested? It's just not real world thinking.

I've done the 1am stroll from Elizabeth to Mawson Lakes, my mate couldn't believe it when he rang the next day to see how I got home, pretty dumb really.

Remember when police would come to your primary school with a teddy bear in a police uniform, and sit all the kids down and talk about Stranger Danger?

Can they do that anymore?

Or is that victim blaming the kids?

You and HH3 still haven’t explained why your threshold for being too dangerous to walk is better/worse than anyone else’s. How can you possibly know.

Some people wouldn’t walk down hindley or even Rundle streets and would think anyone being out after dark “should be more aware of their surroundings”

I’m sure neither of you lads are that bad but what makes your threshold the correct one?

Well my threshold when I was a dumb 17 year old wasn't low enough and I got my head kicked in.

My threshold now, as a dumb 30 year old is much higher. I live and learnt. I was lucky to get that chance to learn from it. Some don't.

So how about we teach people to take precautions, like I do now, rather than tell them they should walk around alone at night, because it's their right to feel safe, and putting them in unnecessary danger.

Well women are more likely to be raped or killed in their own homes, so walking around late at night is probably smarter than staying home.
