If Port are serious then they should be flogging Melbourne by 10 goals. Dees most overrated side in the afl by a mile.

From my knowledge of players at AFL Clubs, they receive match payments on top of their contract

You were going to provide some evidence for this a while back, how'd you go with that?

AFL players 100% definitely receive a retainer and then match payments/bonuses on top of that. Not sure how that is reflected when being reported in the news though.

I'm with Dutchy, not the ones on $5-600k+, they don't get match payments on top of their salary. Some of the players around $2-300k might, but someone like Wines isn't getting $4500 per game on top of his salary.

It's how the clubs manage their caps. They pay a 1st or 2nd year rookie $120,000 with a bonus payment per match, assuming they won't play all 22 matches or, if they do, their match payment is still covered in the TPP for the year, that's how clubs end up only paying 95% of the TPP and "bank" some for the following year. ( As they now can ).

If you look at the numbers :

22 players x $4500 per week ( BC's number ) = $99,000 per week.

$99,000 x 22 rounds = $2,178,000 per year.

So if the TPP ( Total Player Payments ) is $10.37m is that $2.178m included in that $10.37m or is it over and above, in your view?

If you can offer links to AFLPA or AFL Salary Cap information I'll happily concede. I look forward to reading it.

I'm the first to admit I don't personally know any footballers who would be on the 500k+ but the few blokes I know and have spoke to definitely get a retainer, I don't know what there on their on but it wouldn't be the bracket you suggested.

Media would have to report "x has signed on for $700k pa, plus another $100k if he plays every game" but they don't.

It was a few years back but I have seen a contract on a former Crow champion. Simply an annual payment but then bonuses around B&F position, team position on the ladder and Brownlow position.

Bonuses on B&F and Brownlow position is a horrible idea! You've got the ball at 50, a player is free inside 50, pretty sure you'd be taking the shot rather than doing the team thing. Even if its just the smallest inkling in the back of your mind - just couldn't be good.

22. Player Contract Information
(a) The AFL agrees to provide the AFLPA with the following statistical information, on a de-identified basis, relating to player contracts, Additional Services Agreements and other payments on or before 1 March each year of the Term, or such other date as agreed between the Parties:
(iii) a breakdown by numbers and percentages of base only and base and match contracts for Players on an industry and Club basis;

The above implies that there are some players who do, and some who don't receive match payments.

Reading on, you get:

Schedule C – Minimum Terms and Conditions
1. Base and Senior Match Payments
(a) An AFL Club shall pay each Player it employs other than a first year draft choice Player, a second year Player, a Rookie Player or a Player promoted from the Rookie List, a minimum base payment per annum and a minimum Senior Match payment per Senior Match as set out in the table below: Year: 2017
Base Payment: $100,000
Senior Match Payment $4,300

It is not clear, however I would assume that where a contract is greater than the total match payments and minimum charge, then an agreed amount can be paid. EG: Minimum of $100k, + 26 games @ $4,300 = $211,800.
So provided you're on more than $211,800, you might only get an agreed amount, rather than a base + match payments set up.

Agreed Trader. If you're on base you'd get + match fees, if you're on over base + all matches played you don't.

This goes back to BC telling us SPP was on over $300k this year ( as a 2nd year player ) which I wouldn't believe is correct. Well, I don't.

He would most certainly be base + match payments.

Surely you’re smart enough to concede that each contract can be negotiated individually, and that some may include extra bonuses for every match and some might not?

Each player is paid every game they play and this is paid on top of their contract. How many times do I have to repeat this?? Trust me. I know Booney has the shits because he's wrong, but sometimes you just need to concede this and move on. :D
