A NORTHERN suburbs club has been turfed out of the Adelaide Footy League for the remainder of the season after a player’s eight-week ban for striking.

The league today suspended all three of Salisbury North’s senior teams for the rest of 2018 for breaking an amended affiliation agreement regarding poor on-field behaviour.

Last night the league’s tribunal handed an eight-week ban to Salisbury North player Alex Stengle for striking Unley Mercedes opponent James Khabbaz in their division two match at Kingswood Oval on Saturday.

Salisbury North has been on notice with the league since three players and a former coach received suspensions from the 2013 division one grand final replay.

The league stripped the Bagsters Rd club of eight premiership points in 2015, four in 2016 and 10 last season after Salisbury North players were suspended.

Salisbury North’s Alex Stengle has been suspended for eight weeks, which has cost his club a spot in the Adelaide Footy League for the rest of the year. Picture: Stephen Laffer.
In a statement sent to clubs earlier today, league chief executive John Kernahan said the organisation had attempted to work with Salisbury North but the club had not complied to conditions.

“The league executive will continue to counsel recalcitrant clubs until it is believed there is little to be gained by expending further resources to which at that point, simply move on and do so in the comfort the executive and staff have afforded the given club every opportunity to comply with league standards,” Kernahan said.

Salisbury North was fifth on the division two ladder with a 5-5 record after the weekend.

Losing 10 premiership points last season ultimately led to Salisbury North being relegated from division one for the first time in 16 years.

Before the start of this season, Salisbury North signed an agreement with the league that stated it would be expelled from the competition if a player, official, member or supporter was found guilty of an offence considered serious enough in nature.

The tribunal deemed Stengle’s striking charge as “intentional” and “high” contact with “high” impact.

Khabbaz has been ruled out of Unley Mercedes’ clash against St Peter’s Old Collegians this Saturday because of concussion.

The Adelaide Footy League has also deregistered Stengle — the league’s division one best and fairest in 2011 — for exceeding its 12-game suspension threshold.

Last night’s ban was Stengle’s first in the Adelaide Footy League but he received a six-match suspension for striking while playing for Central District’s reserves in 2005.

Stengle can move to another competition because he has not reached the 16-game threshold of football’s national deregistration policy that has been adopted by the SANFL and many country leagues.

Kernahan said Salisbury North was welcome to apply for reaffiliation for the 2019 season but the club would need to meet certain criteria and clearly identify “how they might continue to be a member of this league without a reoccurrence”.

He said Salisbury North players are free to join other clubs for the remainder of the season.

Salisbury North coach Gavin Chaplin said players and officials were set to meet at the club tonight to discuss the league’s decision but he did not want to comment further.

Club president David Hood has been contacted for comment.

Another aspect of this is opposition clubs losing out on home match days as far as BBQ/Bar takings etc.

Anyone know if they just have to grin and bear it or if the League may come and pay some sort of compensation.

To lose 3 home games on a day ABC grade takes alot of potential incoming funds out the club

We and Elizabeth had our Past player & sponsors days affected when Rosewater was suspended. The league did not offer any recompense to either of our clubs.

Maybe the Adelaide FL could use the $5k bond that Salisbury North have lost to compensate those home teams.

It's hard to really tell, looks like the Unley player is pulling on his jumper staying close, the SN player appears to be watching the ball then turns and shoves/hits him away?

How can you tell if he's punched him or just pushed him in the chest to break away? :?

8 weeks off that footage, i'd be filthy.

I'm with you on this one. I slow that down to frame by frame and it doesn't even look like the SN player looks at the Unley player. Pretty hefty penalty for what appears to be an act that would happen 50 times a game of simply shoving a player off who's grabbing you to gain a meter. Wow big call by the league, don't reckon it would stand up in a real court with people who know what they're talking about.

Don't have to be looking at someone to know where they are, more so if there is already body contact

Exactly, or the AdFL should explain how they are going to use the $5k windfall.

What is going to happen to games scheduled against SN? 10 goal Forfeit?

It would appear everyone is getting a win the same margin as Unleys on the weekend.

To

It may not have been worse as that one incident but the club hasn't been kicked out of the comp based on one incident. This is long term issues with the clubs on field issues and deep down the club has obviously failed, it agreed to obligations. Yes i feel for the playes and club members not involved but the club agreeed to certain terms and they have been breached.

The question about clearances is irrelevant for most of you i would have thought? Why would you want any of these uncontrollable players at your club? Or is it just the SN jumper that makes them uncontrollable?

Amazing reading some of these posts.

This idea that Northies are always the victims of some kind of broad, but unparticularised conspiracy is largely what has lead to this situation.

Compare and contrast to Smithfield 5 years back and the attitudes emanating are vastly different

Not a conspiracy Jo but I would suggest a prejudice.

I have just watched the footage. On that alone it is difficult to judge what happened. If the Unley player was knocked out one would think that Stengle delivered a blow to the jaw.

He does not seem to be looking at the player when he delivers the push/strike. It seems that Stengle is more upright than his opponent when he does the push/strike. I wonder whether he meant to whack him in the chest but got him higher by mistake. I have palmed people in the pace in similar situations before by mistake.

Just on the footage I would classify it as reckless, although I think applying these categories is quite frankly ridiculous. Seeing as I am the closest thing to a judge on here you should all agree with me. In fact if it wasn't for my after hours activities I'd probably be on the High Court by now.

Saw it on the news. Clearly an intentional punch to the face. Not worth 8 weeks though. Unlucky for SN it was on video. Would have got 2 max in the SFL probably a reprimand.

Bit of a bonus for those clubs scheduled to play out at their oval given they are a better side out there by some margin.
