Sorry to hear TDK. even when you know it is coming it is a shock. I have been through it twice and I know a third is around the corner.
Do another budget, put the mortgage on Interest only, complete that CV with any help you can get and keep looking for work. If you think they are 1 to 2 years away from rehiring try something new.
Also FIFO for a short time can have its rewards but also downsides. I did it for 5 years but had young kids so would not suggest it then, but as FC suggested maybe now is a good time?

All the best TDK, its bullshit that management think that way.

Similar to my employment, there are a few in the 55 to 65 age bracket think they are entitled to voluntary redundancy package. Only issue is their position is required as the workload we have is off the scale. These are people who have worked for the organisation for 35 years plus on a generous superannuation scheme.

All the best TDK.

If you need a hand with your resume at all let me know, I’ve just redone mine (about to post about my job in the other thread before I read this)

I’m not a boilermaker but I am in defence so may be able to help.

Best wishes TDK.
Sounds like you have your head screwed on the right way so I'm sure you'll fall on your feet.
Sometimes a change is a good thing but it might not be evident immediately.

I just reiterate everything thing that’s already been said mate.

I was made redundant 15 years ago, thought it was the end of the world, started a business and have not looked back. Sometimes things just happen for a reason

I was sad today, a regular at my pub who was a lovely old man passed away a couple of weeks ago. He'd always come in with his son for lunch in the front bar and have a pint and a schnitzel while his son would have a water and schnitzel, his son is probably in his 50s.
It was really nice that he took his dear old Dad out for lunch every day and made me feel a bit sad that I didn't perhaps have more lunches with my old man before he passed away a couple of years ago.
Today the son came in by himself and had his water and schnitty, it really hit home today seeing that as it was my first stint in the front bar for a while.
RIP Frank, miss ya.

All the best TDK.
You sound rather level headed. Take a few days.
Get your resume tidied up.
Then I'd get a list of potential employers and go there personally to hand in a resume.

Thanks boys for your thoughts and wishes. Had plenty of support from you guys, my friends and the footy boys so that's helped alot. Mum and my girlfriend have been great too. Felt so odd being at home all day today, didn't feel right and it hit home once the clock hit 3.30 (knock off time) but was nice and relaxing at the same time.

Had a guy from Workpac call me back for a chat this afternoon, he said to get my resume sorted ASAP so they can look for a new job for me ASAP. The plan is too work on and update my resume over the weekend. From what I looked at there's lots of work around for me. Just have to be proactive now.

Might take you up on your offer Benny if need be.

Thanks mate, I have to say things usually have a habit of working out well for me so hopefully that trend continues.

Something that I found a little scray today- I still have my original cover letter for when I applied for the Defence Industries Pathways Program, a VET Boatbuilding and Metal Fab course I did at Port Adelaide TAFE in the second semester of year 11 and all of year 12, it was sponsored by the AWD Alliance and apon completing that I applied for an apprenticeship with AIGTS and went from there. The cover letter was dated 19/6/2008 so it been exactly 10 years between then and getting made redundant. Perhaps a case of the universe going full circle on me.

One thing to be mindful of TDK is your wage expectations.

We're in manufacturing and have had dozens of ex-Holdens workers come and apply after we contacted a re-employment agency set up as part of the Holden shut down. Basically all of them have asked "What's the pay rate?" in the first contact, some of them over the phone before they even looked further into the position.

Most of them have laughed at us despite our factory workers getting above award rates.
