The pleasing part was the conduct of both sides, usually close games bring out the worst in players and spectators, it was a great game to umpire and be a part of, always a great sign of sportsmanship when every player from the losing side still shakes your hand and comments on the umpiring for the day.

Was a great game to watch and besides very briefly talking to you earlier in the morning i didn't know you were out there. The other umpire was also barely noticeable which is strange for him. Lots of kids in both sides helps with playing in great spirits. Glad the underdog won just a pity the underdog didnt even get close in the main game!

Cheers mate, yeah he only "Douged out" a couple of times where I had a few players quizzing me, I just said "Hey, Doug's rule book is 14 pages bigger than anyone else's", overall I thought he done a great job.
Your guys just toiled away, Two Wells seemed a little more polished but United were more willing to get their hands dirty, big Jarman is pretty handy and mobile for his size.
The weather has been kind so far this season.

Umpiring a women’s Div 1 game today, involving the Darebin Falcons. Daisy Pearce’s home club. This is the level below VFL women’s, done a few Div 2 games and the standard is ok. Interesting to see how this stacks up, and if Daisy is in the crowd.

Didn’t spot her there, mind you one of the Darebin girls had a very prominent forehead.

Dear Diary,

Apologies for the lack of updates.

Officiated quite a few games since the last post in here, also missed a few dealing with "other things"...

This weekend I had a Saturday Morning U/19's - Top of the table Div 2 clash. Pretty ordinary to be honest, more turn overs than a country bakery. My fellow whistle blower "carded" a couple of lads after a melee.

Sunday morning I helped out with an U/13's game in the morning. This time it was me pulling out the yellow for a kid who was late, high & intentional..... have a spell champ. Ran an arvo Womens game with a chick umpire. She was actually pretty good, other than saying "keep going" rather than "playy on". This game was one way traffic & a 12 goal win to the away team. Kudos to the Laurimar Footy Club - a 6 pack of Carlton Draughts delivered to the umps room post game (to be shared with the boys) who ran the super rules game, on the other deck.

Knee standing up, but I don't run during the week now.

I've had some cracking games of late too, had a one point game in a top of the table B Grade clash a few weeks ago along with a few other close ones.

Had an entertaining A Grade match on the weekend where the underdog put up a good fight, I think they may have won 3 of the quarters but lost out by a more polished side.

I have the A Grade match of the round this week, should be a good game to be part of, I did do my hammy at the same ground between the same two clubs last season

I saw arguably the worst game of senior football yesterday in my life - B Grade in the WFL

However as I soon found out, for a significant proportion of the participants (I wont call them footballers) their verbalised knowledge of the laws of football and how the game should be umpired was acutely inversely proportional to the their actual skill execution of our great game.

Don't get me wrong there were some good blokes out there just trying to have a kick and a catch with their mates and supporting their club - playing footy for the right reasons. However the a grade idiots whose d grade ability made the whole experience less than enjoyable certainly from a footy purist point of view.

I dips my lid to the regular umpires up there.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Ran out a few more games over the weekend. 2 games Saturday, which co-incided with the home teams sponsors day, past players day. So there was a bit of a crowd under the clubroom verandah. Got a bit of well meaning advice from the refreshed locals late in the day. Bahahaha - holding the ball, is holding the ball, even right in front of you clowns.

Did a junior game yesterday on a bit of a dodgy right knee, made it through ok. Very blustery condition meant scoring to one end of the ground was difficult. Had to enforce the BS "mercy" rule when the margin blew out to over 10 goals. Its actually easy to set up, no one likes it though. But the league insists we enforce it. Whatever.

Finals (Juniors & Womens) begin over here next week, it will be interesting to see what appointments I get. As I have only made myself available on Sundays for August, going to the next 3 Hawks games.

Dear Diary,

Had 2 games yesterday, Women's Elimination Finals. Once again a fairly stiff breeze favoring one end of the ground. In both games the teams who were pre game favorites, won the toss, and kicked with it and jumped out to 4/5 goal leads. Neither team was headed for the day thereafter. In the second game South Morang were 9 goals down at 3/4 time, and rattled on 6 unanswered goals. Only to loose by 3.

Was enjoying a post game beer, watching the div 1 game, when I noticed gender bender Hannah Montanna - or whatever his name is, in the crowd. He is a big bloke, let alone a big women.

Rocked up to co-coach my 2/3's on Saturday morning, and after the usual discussion on how many we needed to give the oppo we all realised no umpy had arrived.

After waiting a good 10 mins post kick off time MatteeG pulled out the whistle and umpired my first official 4 quarter game. Had a blast, let a lot go including anything close to the boundary line. Probably a little lenient with the distance the kids could run before disposing and let the kids wrestle for the ball a bit more than they are used to. Also allowed smothers which apparently isnt allowed (I cant believe is a rule)!

Found out today I get a lazy $40 too- good times

Getting to the pointy end of the season and as there are less games now, they need less umpires. My mid season injury counting against me a bit. Sounds like I will get a junior GF this weekend and then I’m done. First year here so no doubt it takes a while to establish yourself. I’ve enjoyed the winter runs and learnt a great deal.

I will turn out again next winter.
