Interesting theory, kind of see his point. Just bringing in 18 year olds can't work, they need some mature age players as Murphy Kreuzer Simpson don't have much longer and Thomas is finished.

Not sure he named the right targets, but it's got some merit.

All list managers talk about the sweetspot in age/ games profile.
They should be targeting equally. Get the best 18 yr old you can and top up with experience.
Its getting the right experienced players though, that's the tricky bit

Isn’t that exactly what they’ve done in the past few years? And it hasn’t worked?

Getting super experienced guys for free and keeping your picks seems to work well (GWS vs GC, plus Brisbane with hodge, WC with Mitchell etc)

But in saying that, that it is our issue. We have a heap of kids playing in key positions and our experience is 'ordinary' or don't play in key positions (Thomas, Simpson, Murphy, Kruezer) . We have no one in the sweet spot age bracket you speak of.

I think the age bracket we require is the 22-27 where we have very little quality and depth. But it's something I think we can spin around quite quickly. I'm happy to give up Lukoscious (sp?) for two decent players and hopefully we have the ability to get in a Sheil and or Coniglio/Gaff.

Now, if only we can get our best 22 on the park, that will also help considerably.

When I have more time I'll do some more analysis but if you look at the spines of most AFL clubs, their average games/age + the amount of time they've played together as a group is much more than ours (given that we've turned over 42 players in three years).

It's not the fact Carlton have tried to bring ready made players in, it's the fact they're not an attractive proposition for players who are already playing at AFL level so it's fringe players coming in and they aren't the answer. Kerridge, Wright ( who has been ok ), Lobbe, O'Shea etc just aren't regulars at AFL level and they don't help the cause. Then Rowe and Casboult are the KPP across the half forward lines, they're battlers at best.

It's going to take even longer than Carlton fans want to hear, sure there's some jets in Cripps and Curnow but blokes like Petrovski-Seton, Silvagni, Phillips, Lamb, Lang, Marchbank have now got 30 odd games under their belts, they need to be more consistent in their effort at this level.

There is still some turn over to come with Thomas, Casboult, Rowe, Lobbe, O'Shea, Kerridge etc still to be moved on in the next 12 months or so and who of the "kids" will replace them?

We keep hearing about Cripps and Curnow but they are not going to be able to take the club forward by themselves. Every club has its stars but the successful ones bat very deep and have a better bottom dozen in their 22 picked weekly that the opposition. Just look at Richmond.

Agreed and I have reservations about Cripps' ability to do what he does, on his own, for an extended period of time. He's going to really cop some punishment.

Exactly!

Prior to us bringing in Lang, Kerridge, Lamb, Jacksch, Palmer, Sumner, Wood and Phillips, we had to bring mid range players other clubs didn't because we had zero depth. We had no one in the reserves even pushing for a spot, which meant we had even more dud-der players playing in the seniors.

I like the approach we've taken. Petrovski-Seton isn't a gun but having him play in the middle for 30 games is a good launching point. Ditto for Dow, Ditto for Fisher. They aren't stars but they'll support stars as they come through. Our problem is now, we're not seen as a destination club. If North aren't.... how will we position ourselves differently?

At the moment all I see is that we're a feeder club for others. If we can't land a big fish, we may as well take Lukosious and hope he hangs around and provides some service

Behind our top 3 or 4, we run VERY thin. If you disbanded our club today, who would get picked up by other teams - Cripps, Curnow, Kruezer (who got medical-led at Collingwood and failed), Docherty, Dow (on potential), Petrovski-Seton (on potential). That might be it. And that's our problem.

Nah we passed on Wines as we’re getting Sloane instead.
Sloane’s the better player of the two anyway.

We could do alot worse than Sloane though.
We need a mature mid to help Cripps out.
3 year contract for Sloane would suffice surely?
