Booney wrote:AFTER nearly seven years as Head of Football at the Carlton Football Club, Andrew McKay has today informed staff and the playing group that 2018 will be his final season at Carlton.

McKay was appointed to the position in October 2011 after six years working with the AFL in various roles including AFL Game Analysis Manager and Chairman of the AFL Match Review Panel.

In his time at Ikon Park on the Executive Team, the widely respected McKay has overseen the management of the football department including coaches, playing group, high performance and medical teams, as well as recruiting and off-field development.

Such a shame after the lofty heights the CFC have achieved during his tenure:

2011: 5th
2012: 10th
2013: 6th
2014: 13th
2015: 18th
2016: 14th
2017: 16th

4/29 still at carlton
4/29 now at other clubs
21/29 no longer playing afl.

What a terrible strike rate.

Bit of pressure on the remaining draft classes.....the CEO was spruiking on the radio Friday night that their 18 to 21 year old bracket us as good as any other club!

What I don't understand is how come their draft picks are so high for a team that has gone so crap for a prolonged period of time?

Didn't their sanctions end in the mid 2000's?

2 finishes in the top 6 would affect it a bit, perhaps gave a bit away in trades too

A little from column A .... One would think?

Given so many listed aren't on lists at all anymore would suggest many just weren't good enough. Lucas, Menzel, Watson, Brokehorst, Rainbow, 5 x first round picks that amounted to virtually nothing. Clubs shouldn't have gotten it that badly wrong

Definitely both.

Boekhurst from memory wasn't even in anyone's vision to be drafted top 50 but we took him. He came out of the blue!

Cripps in our eyes was going top 3 so we were glad to get him. So it does work both ways HOWEVER we've had maybe 2 succcesses over 10 years! By anyone's account that's a shocking strike rate.

The development aspect I think is shocking though. We just haven't allowed a Lucas or Boekhurst to develop. You look at the guys we've turned-over, it's either development or culture. Our extended run of being sh1t in the ressies would lead me to think it's developmental.

I'd like to see a list of another team's last 12 years draft prospects and see how many games they've played, cos no doubt they'd triple or quadruple the number we have had play. I still say, Geelong weren't great because of picks 1-10 it was the picks in the 30's and 40's that made them great. Our problem is that we're picking 1-18 poorly so picking 30-40 is a nightmare. If you have a look at those picks for us, only Duigan (pick 70), Armfield, Rowe, Buckley (now playing at GWS), Graham amounted to anything (and then, not much).

Or maybe a more sensible approach is to replace the coaching and development staff.

On the father/son thing, I think there should be a sibling rule too so brothers can play for the same club to make the transition of moving interstate less daunting for an 18 year old.
