I called it a-sa-hi in Japan and they knew what I was talking about :)

They don’t usually elongate the vowels like we do though so it wouldn’t surprise me if the second one was correct

Must admit that's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced, but I don't pay much attention to it. Cheers traveler

In English we could pronounce "i" like "hi" (as in "hello") or as a shortened "ee" sound, like in "igloo".
The Japanese always pronounce the "I' as in igloo. So Asahi would be "A-sa-hee" (shortened "ee" sound).

I was surprised at the good quality of beer in Japan, apparently they got Germans over to show them how to do it over a hundred years ago and it is now a big part of their culture. Unlike us, where we usually have no qualms about drinking for the express purpose of getting smashed, Japanese use beer as an accompaniment for food, and it will often make an appearance at family gatherings or festivals, like flower viewing, (which is basically throwing a picnic blanket under a tree in blossom, eating sushi and getting smashed). Sapporo is another good beer, and when you want to impress, go for Yebisu, with the picture of the 7 Gods on the label. It is a little pricier, but you can taste the quality, and brings an air of refinement to your piss up.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Good write up, but disagree about the Japanese having good beer in general.

The fact that they tax it on malt content rather than alcohol means most of them are pretty bland tasting lagers. Or even worse, happoshu, which apparently isn’t even technically beer

I just looked at my untappd, I have had 57 Japanese beers and I rated 3 of them as very good(4/5) and 15 as bad (2.5/5 or less)

There were quite cheap though which was good.

Look for coedo and kiuchi breweries, thought they were pretty good.
