Mick Godden joins Crows Coaching Staff

Postby clanger » Wed Sep 26, 2018 7:12 pm

delaide has finalised its coaching structure for season 2019 after appointing Michael Godden as an assistant coach.

Godden has coached Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL since 2010, leading the Eagles to a premiership in his second year at the club.

The Eagles have appeared in finals in each of Godden’s nine seasons at the helm, with the veteran mentor holding a winning percentage of 62.6.

Godden is no stranger to the Crows, drafted by Adelaide with pick No. 116 in the Club’s first-ever national draft in 1992.

Head of Football Brett Burton said Godden would assist the Club’s midfield at AFL level and work closely with Scott Camporeale in this role. Camporeale will take further responsibility around game strategy in season 2019.

“Michael has been a successful coach with Woodville West Torrens for a number of years and brings a wealth of experience and positive attributes to our Club,” Burton said.

“He drives high standards, is an outstanding leader and communicator and we’re confident his coaching experience can help our midfield group in 2019.”

With the way the Eagles choke he will fit in quite nicely at the Crows. Not sure how he'll react to the 19th man though.

Godden has already proved he can’t handle the 19th man well.

That means that four out of WWT's six coaches have now left the club to coach in the AFL.

As a Crows fan I'm not happy about this but this should be a blessing in disguise for Eagles fans. They really need a fresh voice but given Godden's regular success during the season might've been tempted to persist with him.

Godden was good for the club but you can't help but feel he may have underachieved in the premiership count given that we made the finals every year in his tenure and the GF 3 times for only 1 win. Hopefully the new coach will bring a more attacking game plan as our deficiency was kicking enough goals to win finals. Eags and sturt now competing in the same market, will be interesting!

Wedgetail, if you recall when Godden took over from Fuller all those years ago one of the things I recall him saying at the time was that he indeed was going to bring an attacking game style to the eagles. I think he did that for his first couple of years. Not sure what happened from about 2014 onwards but we suddenly became far more defensive often relying on strangling other teams rather than kicking big scores.

There is no question that Godden underachieved given the amount of times we finished top or second at the end of the minor round or got us into Grand Finals. That said, I often felt we had a pretty average set of players at times so it cannot be denied he squeezed every drop of the talent out of them. He also successfully brought through a range of junior who are now playing AFL.

But his departure was definitely overdue. His game plan just doesn't stack up in finals for whatever reason and he is too rusted onto certain players who continuously fail us in the big games. Only a new coach with a fresh outlook can overcome this.

Luckily, the consistency of the club over a long period, coupled with a history of sticking with a coach, means that the position of head coach of the eagles will be highly sought after. I expect huge interest from locals and those from interstate, including those younger coaches looking to use the club as a springboard to the AFL.

Anyway, thanks for your time at the club Godden and wish you all the best in your job with the Crows

I reckon Godden will be excellent for the Crows and I think it is a good time for the Eagles to have a fresh voice at the top.

I reckon you can split in to 3 Godden's tenure at the Eagles:

2010-11 where he took over from Fuller, still with a very strong leadership group. This group did ok during the minor round but excelled in September and ended up pinching the flag from the Dogs (and ending their era) in 2011.

2012-16 where he needed to rebuild after losing the likes of McKenzie, Powell, Cica, Parry, Grocke etc. He went the big money recruits option with Wundke, Boyd, Ainger. They dominated 2015/16 but ultimately failed on Grand Final day both in 2015 and 2016 where they should've won both premierships.

2017-18 where he rebuilt again, this time with locals and the return of some AFL experienced former Eagles. Surprised many with the minor premiership last year, but ran out of puff by the end of the year and hardly a yelp in finals. I thought the Eagles were playing the right brand of football this year and barring some poor mistakes (and some Wilson brilliance) should have beaten Norwood. We'll never know what might have been after the Prelim farce - but given the Eagles history of fading in finals - it isn't a stretch to say the Eagles still had the choke collar on. But the future is still bright at WWTFC.

Nabbed one premiership when he shouldn't have and lost two when he should have.

Interesting comparing to Fuller. Both had 9 seasons. Both won one premiership.

Fuller made it to 4 Grand Finals (losing 3) and Godden 3 (losing 2). Fuller won 12 and lost 12 finals, Godden won 8 and lost 12. Godden won 3 minor premierships and didn't miss finals, Fuller won 1 minor premiership and missed finals once. Godden minor round winning record of 66% and Fuller 64%. If you would've told Eagles supporters 9 years ago that Fuller would be rated better overall than Godden due to his better finals record, they would look at you with dread.

Overall though we've been lucky, both with Godden and Fuller at the helm this century. 2 out of every 3 wins ain't bad to get you through an Adelaide winter.

I wonder who is next? With the tightening of the purse strings in the modern era - perhaps Powell could be CEO, club runner and coach? Wouldn't mind him back on the ball neither tbh.

Fuller's Grand Final record was much maligned but Centrals were clearly the best team in season 2001 and 2004* and also clearly in the best form in the second half of the 2005 season.

The Centrals sides of the 2000s were also much, much better sides than the 2015 Bloods or 2016 Blues.

*The Eagles could've and probably should've won the 2SF in 2004 but obviously the rest that season is history.

Yep, agree. 2000 was another we should’ve won, but that was obviously the year before Fuller. I reckon North overran us in a Prelim we prob could’ve won late in Fullers reign as well. Remember Motlop running all over us late in the game. Norwood just pipped us by 2 points after we went scoreless in the last qtr of a prelim early with Godden as well.

And if the AFL add ANOTHER two teams, we will be looking back and saying the 2015 Bloods and the 2016 Blues are much, much better than whatever is left over after the AFL pillage of that future hypothetical situation. That would not make Mattner nor Mickan better coaches than whoever is around then, just that there will always be more cream left over for the state leagues when there are less AFL sides.
