Leverrock also picked up 4 fa to get Walkerville a win, despite the off-season exits they've suffered.
Knowles had a less than perfect start with none-fa and a pair.

It seems a par score at Payneham is about 100. Is the pitch that bad and is this the reason for Barber taking so many wickets?

One of the worst decks I have played on. But in saying that, Barber's wickets rarely come from the pitch assistance.
Has great variation of pace and drifts the ball in relatively late which brings him a lot of LBW's.

At Payneham, just bowl back of a length if you are a medium pacer and half the balls will stay low.

There were a few pairs also for Grange in Round 1 - Barnes, Weiderman and R Fry (King pair).

Didn't they just re-lay the pitch at Payneham?

Is the criticism above about the brand new pitch? If so I'm amused.

I just assumed we were all talking about the old wicket still, didn't even cross my mind that they would be silly enough to be playing on a new deck laid within the last 6 weeks. Shouldn't be on it for at least 4 months. Mind you, I shouldn't be surprised with anything the NPSP council does....

It was laid in January

(or are we referring to rolling it? because that definitely only started at the end of September)

Righto, makes more sense now. That shouldn't be too bad then.
36 wickets at 10.94 is surprising. Can only assume the curator is still getting used to the new square. :?: :?: :?:

Just had a look at the Payneham list, Boerema was batting 11 last year and opened.
Edington averaged in the teens in their C's last year and batted #4 for their 1st.

Would suggest perhaps they were struggling for players round 1, that or a few have dropped down the grades. Their 3rds smacked Pooraka around to the tune of 390.

There's always a bedding in period on a new deck.
If its fully grassed it'll improve with the weather.
Having said that I hope the council knows what they are doing, and or spending the time, or she's ****ed!

As a general rule does council pay for the wickets to be installed?
And you guys let a council prepare your wickets, is that across the board in ATCA?
What costs are involved for preparatiojn of wickets by council?

Every council does it differently.

NPSP has an in-house curator and charges the Payneham Sports Association in turn. This is an annual fee tied into the lease agreement which includes access the buildings etc.

ACC charge peppercorn leases for the oval, and then the lease holder is responsible for all ground and building (toilet block) maintenance.

Charles Sturt charge a minimal fee ($565 per season) and does the grounds and building maintenance, however the cricket club is then responsible for the pitch itself. Generally they can either do it themselves, or get someone else in to do it on their behalf, at a cost of roughly $150 per week.
Interestingly, I am aware of a club that has one of the CS ovals, gets it for the season for their juniors on Sundays, but doesn't allow anyone else to take over the Saturday lease. Said club then sub-leases the Saturday component, at a rate of $350 per week. Basically they rent it out twice of the 20 weeks for the season and they are already in front on the season hire fee, and get their other 18 weeks for free.

Burnside Council also lease out ovals, however they are the tightest of the lot. Generally charge in the order of $150 per week, and that only gets you access to the oval. You then have to get your own pitches prepared on top of that.

Thanks for that, not too dissimilar to the B&L except nobody has the option for council to prepare decks, which is a good thing. Most pay about the 700 nark for oval lease and then prepare own decks, make a donation for water use and everyone seems to be happy. I think we even stipulate in lease agrrement that council are not to touch the pitch square.

The coin toss is going to be crucial. Will be plenty of slow pitches this week.

No play at Rostrevor today. Pitch looked horrible... interestingly though on the oval next to it the first XI were playing
