Port Adelaide 2019

Talk on the national game

From the 2012 phantom draft:

7. Port Adelaide - Sam Mayes

Height: 187cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 20/05/94
Club: North Adelaide
Draft range: 7-13
Although he might not have been at his best through the national championships, Mayes returned to form at the end of the season for SANFL club North Adelaide and reminded everyone of his talent. Perhaps one of the best kicks in the draft, Mayes is an athletic forward who can move through the midfield and do it with ease. He takes marks, he leads hard at the ball, and he is the perfect size for the modern player. He will inject all those traits into Port Adelaide, who rate him well within the best 10 or 12 players available this year. The fact he is a homegrown talent is also an important consideration for the Power, given the recent loss of homesick defender Ben Jacobs.

In the mix: Brisbane Lions. They really like Mayes and have done a lot of work on him, but he could even get as far as the Gold Coast at 13.

Could Port perhaps look to play him back up forward across a flank?

Good CHF line of Watts, Lycett and Mayes for the Magpies.
Expensive one though!

Watts and Mayes recruited on 6 figure contracts to play sanfl.

And they say slavery................

Unless you're a rookie everyone is on 6 figure salaries, next.

I think he left that at Brisbane airport then before coming to Port.

Might go back and check out the comments made about Polec when we got him back, this all sounds familiar.

Polec is the opposite if anything.
Good enough but doesn’t try hard enough at times.

Not sure if you think I was taking a potshot at Mayes because he is at Port , I wasn’t. Just how I saw him.

No mate, not at all. You're sensible. ;)

I was just thinking how Polec was in and out of the Brisbane side, IIRC he wasn't worth getting once Adelaide were out of the race for him and look how that's turned out. He's one of a few who have come to Port and become better players, hopefully we can do the same with Mayes.

That’s me, sensible (or just old)

Mayes is a few years older than Polec was when he came back. He will be a solid backup player

Chris Davies :

Chad felt he'd got to a position @PAFC where he was a bit complacent and stale. Ken was asking him to do more & Chad felt he may not be able to deliver.

Ken couldn’t inspire him obviously. Just going thru the motions and gets 6th best in b&f.

Don't think it was intentional but Wingard has really delivered a few slaps to Port as a club and their indigenous program.
