I loved it, Crows confirmed to me he is a top 10 talent and we got him super cheap

But it's not super cheap, you've had to work for 2 drafts to accumulate the picks you lost to get him.

I think they would have been forced to use 26 which they didnt want to do, so slipped it over to WCE and then bought it back.

Agreed, but anyone else would have done, really, wouldn't they?

I don’t see it as a big deal. Couldn’t even tell you who from other teams went

First off they give 26 to WCE in exchange for a future 3rd to save giving it up in the Blakey deal. They then match the bid for Blakey in what is pretty much legalised playstation trades (the points system is rubbish) and then basically reverse the trade they did with WC earlier by giving the Eagles a future 2nd in exchange for their 2018 2nd round pick.

Making the AFL look like absolute idiots. Good on them for trading and drafting so astutely.

saw a funny comment on facebook last night in regard to the swans dealings last night - "the swans were playing chess while the others were playing checkers"

No doubt the rules will be changed again next year to stop clubs from being smart...

I don't understand this.

Sydney had 26, 34, 38 and 39?
34, 38, 39 were enough points to match the bid for Blakey?

Why did they have to trade 26 out first if the 3 picks in the 30s were enough points?

I am assuming because we got 24 out of it??? I don't know

How did you get him cheap if you had to match the points equal to a top 10 pick?
(Not having a go, genuinely don't understand the system).

got him for 3 picks in the 40's - you would do that every day of the week for a top 10 pick

The best way to explain the scenario is via a hypothetical example.

— LET’S say Port Adelaide bid on Sydney Swans academy prospect Nick Blakey at Pick 5 (1878 points)

— IN order to snare him, the Swans now have to match the Power’s bid using the draft picks they already hold.

-FIRST, we must take away the 20 per cent discount (which is automatically given to clubs for bids inside the first round) that would be given to the Swans, meaning they now have to find 1503 points to secure Blakey.

— THE SWANS’ first three selections, which are Pick 26 (729), Pick 33 (563) and Pick 38 (465), covers the Power’s bid.

— However, as the value of those three picks adds up to 1757, they have 254 points left over. This means the Swans’ Pick 38 would slide back to Pick 52 in the draft.

— NOW Nick Blakey is officially selected by the Swans at Pick 5, but the Swans have lost their first two picks (Pick 26 and Pick 33).

— THE Power select again at Pick 6 and the predetermined draft order continues from there.

Why? If the whole recruiting team is in the same room in Adelaide. I thought they were in one of the boxes at Adelaide Oval

I thought to match, the Swans needed to use their highest draft picks for the points first - by getting rid of 26 early, it meant the picks in the 30's would be utilised instead, then once the deal was done, they traded back in for pick 24..

Therefore effectively keeping the pick in the mid 20's and moving on their later picks for a top 10 prospect.

Either way, brilliant work IMO.

You might be right, I thought I had read they stayed in their own states

I did hear that Adelaide had hired a “points analysis’ from the NBA side Washington Wizards

This hypothetical was written ( not by me, BTW ) before the draft.

Yes, exactly what you said, they have to use their first pick first, so they "sell" 26 to use the other picks on Blakey and then "buy" 24 back so they use that in order.

Yeah, ok, didn't realize they had to work down the list of their current picks in order and then the 'change' comes back in the form of the equivalent pick down the order. I just assumed they could use any picks to get to that number of points.

Swans give up Pick 26 and receive a future round 3 pick from West Coast Eagles

Blakey deal goes through.

Swans receive pick 24 from WCE and give them their future 2nd rounder.

So I understand why the swans did it.
I also understand why WCE did the first half.
But after the blakey deal goes through, why would WCE do the second one?

No way Crows would do that, they are not going to risk their whole draft strategy just to piss off another club, they obviously genuinely wanted Thomas and rated him as their No.1 at that stage
