Funny thing is, I wonder if the AFL are turning a blind eye because it's a big Melbourne club, but this from the AFL's website :

SOMETHING significant happened this week that may not have immediately felt that way.

The announcement of the full breadth of the AFL's latest rookie rules, first revealed in early October, heralded a new era in player movement – and promises so much more.

Previously-listed footballers who spent a season or more out of the game no longer have to go through a nerve-racking draft experience to find an AFL home again as a Category A rookie.

They can instead sign with a club in the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) between December 1 and March 15, after all the drafts are over.

So, what's the go here then?

Was mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Essendon would pick up Zac Clarke via this method

Also delisted at the end of 2017.

No but under the rules because he has been out of the system we can get him as a Cat A rookie and therefore he doesn’t have to enter the draft. We can simply claim him

From afl.com November 20th -

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-20/t ... from-draft

Players who were previously listed and then cut or who have spent a year out of the AFL since retirement or delisting themselves no longer have to enter the draft to find their way to a new club.

A team cannot re-sign a player in the SPP the same year it delisted him unless he is overlooked in the drafts, such as in the case of Jacob Townsend at Richmond.

Clubs will happily draft pick 50-75 to some kid who is unproven yet we have Mitch Grigg, a proven mid who can't get a gig in the top flight. There is something seriously wrong with the draft, but moreso the selection panels.

Because most clubs believe they know what a player like Grigg's ceiling is, whereas with the youngsters they don't. They also prefer to take the risk on developing a kid hopefully into a 5-10 year player, whereas they often believe the "here and now" player won't help them for too long.

Just on Griggy, I have no doubt he's good enough to play AFL (once he dropped a coupla kegs), but not sure he'd be an automatic first choice so understand why the clubs take the option they believe will serve them better in the long run.

Then they're more stupid than I took them for. I actually don't believe that though. I think pick 70's drawbacks are known and history will tell you pick 70 will play a handful of games at best. Whereas a team needing a decent mid could take Grigg and he'd play 30-50 easily.

I'm a Carlton support AE, so don't take this the wrong way, but why? Was it publicising it or the fact they decided to take a kid earlier than a lot of other teams?

I thought it was too, but only because I wanted us to be aggressive in a bumper draft and I love the inner machinations of the process.

I'd rather us go hard this year rather than wait another year and possibly get pick 2 or 3. Proof is in the pudding, piling up first round picks isn't doing us a great deal of good.
