Why do selectors all of a sudden think blokes will perform better at test level than they have at shield cricket.

Because 30 years ago a few selectors plucked Ian Healy, Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor from nowhere and they had a bit of success. It hasnt happened since but it doesnt stop the selectors from trying to be nostra fn dameous. In 100 years of cricket I dont think there has been too many to average more in Test cricket than Shiled cricket yet these muppets think they will buck that trend

Crash Craddock reckons less than 3% of cricketers average more at test level than they did at shield level.

Not surprising, I think at international level a bat will average around 80-85% of their first class average.
Dave Warner will be missed!

Can not believe ML is in the squad for SCG. Guy is not up to it.
What batsman currently playing shield cricket averages over 40 in his career, if there is one get them in the team. Least when WSC was on and our 2X1 was playing we unearthed a border/ Hughes/ Hogg .
Warner/ Smith u guys have even more to answer

Others averaging over 40 at first class level are :
Chris Lynn averages 43.3
Glenn Maxwell 41.1
Joe Burns 40.6

Callum Ferguson and George Bailey have both dropped below 40 now after spending most of their career above that figure and surprisingly to me Jake Lehmann averages 38.6

Unfortunately for the above named batsmen none of them come from W.A.

Also I know that K O'Keefe and M Waugh have been critical of the standard of Indian First Class Cricket, but Agarwal has come into test cricket with an average of 49.9 after 47 first class cricket matches. He looked every inch a test cricket especially given the standard of attack Agarwal was facing. Who was the last Australian test debutant to look that good on debut.

Both are idiots. The Ranji Trophy runs through there domestic season with the IPL played at the end. In fact it's setup the way our domestic comp used to be.

Forgotten player ...

2010
SA V NSW
Debut match for NSW
110 +1*

2018
VI V WA
Debut match for VI
162 + 10 Retired Hurt

Nic Maddinson has made tons on debut for 2 SS teams
Both times as an opener

Will the Test selectors have Nic in mind again ?
Nic was dropped from the test team after his highest test score of 22 !
His test average is 6.75

Please note
Im not advocating Nic for re- selection , only that he might be considered for an Ashes tour by the selectors
Players who cash in and make BIG SS hundreds should always be on the radar for test selection

If his form merits it, then maybe, but he sucked at test level. I still have no idea how he was picked ahead of Patterson.

Maddinson is still behind most of the guys we mentioned above.

Surprised with Lynn’s average.
Why has his name not been mentioned before for Test selection?
Not sure he has made many hundreds though at shield level has he?
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I think Lynn has made big scores at Shield level, just not for a while. Not sure he's played many Shield matches over the last 3+ years.

Has never been considered due to injuries, hardly played FC cricket after surgery on 2014.

He has made six first class centuries, making his first in his second SS match

Right NOW at this point of time
Apart for Usman Khawaja , there are seemingly NO other test batsman or SS batsman that are shoe in selections at test level
Marcus Harris deserves more matches , and might become a good batsman

Heres a 2020 vision[Booney sorry I used that year]
This could be the line up based on current ability, availability and perception

Because like the Marsh brothers the selectors have a love affair with him. Always got an opportunity to play for Australia A ahead of other guys more deserving, it's still an absolute farce he got selected ahead of Kurtis Patterson for the series against South Africa in 2016.

Even for T20 his record ain't that flash wirh an average of 23.69 with no centuries

O’Keeffe’s no idiot. He might have a quirky sense of humour & different laugh but anyone that has listened to him enough talk cricket, knows he’s very well read on the game.
