Disagree.

Assuming the average life span is 80 years, and it takes you 15 minutes to get your ticket, there is a 1 in 2.8m chance of dying during that 15 minutes.

Now assume you buy a 36 game quick pick ticket. Each line has a 1 in 8,145,060 chance of winning, so your 36 game ticket has a 1 in 226,252 chance of winning.

Your ticket is 12.39 times more likely to win, than you dying in that random 15 minutes it took you to purchase.

You're assuming that there's an equal chance of dying in every 15 minute period over those 80 years.

However, you're significantly more likely to die during a 15 minute car trip than 15 minutes sitting on the sofa, for example. I assumed this was the implication.

Correct, I did calculate it on a flat death rate.
Not everyone drives to get their tickets. Some people work in a shopping centre with a newsagent that sells them. Their 1 minute walk is significantly safer.

But lets assume you do drive, and that's what the above post was based on.

According to the huffington post, the average American spends 17,600 minutes per year driving. (https://newsroom.aaa.com/2016/09/americ ... ving-year/)

That means you make 1173, 15 minute trips per year. (approx. 3 per day)
Over 80 years, that's 93,688 trips.

According to Forbes, you have a 1 in 88 chance of dying in a car crash (https://www.forbes.com/sites/tombarlow/ ... 6210e1be76)

So for 88 people, they've made 8,260,267 15 minute car trips, in which 1 has died.

As mentioned previously, your 36 game ticket has a 1in 226,252 chance of winning.

Your ticket is 36.5 times more likely to win than you dying (as a result of a car crash) in a 15 minute car ride to get your ticket.

Terrible news, really feel for the bloke and his family, thankfully all are apparently safe. I believe there’s a GoFundMe setup for anyone that’s able to help out
